My son is 1 and was hospitalised in January with a severe blood infection and endocarditis. He spent a month in hospital and was on IV antibiotics for 6 weeks. Since January he has had rhinovirus, adenovirus and enterovirus (Hand foot and mouth) all of which caused a high fever.
The first 2 were while he was an inpatient. The second he was discharged and then readmitted with - they were concerned it was his heart again due to his reaction.
So since the beginning of feb he has had an unexplained fever 3 times. First time was for 5 days and then he was fine- probs another virus. Second was for 8 days he was admitted overnight for observation, viral swabs done inc covid19 all negative but his consultant pretty confident it was a virus.
Now this week, another fever this time 4 days. It's stopped now and he's developed a rash so must be yet another virus.
My question is how normal is this?
Obviously the fact that we haven't left the house for 6 weeks bar my husband going shopping (and washing hands before and after etc) hasn't stopped him for picking up something again!
We have an appt in a couple of weeks with infectious diseases and immunology as they wanted to do some tests on the back of his original infection - but it's likely this won't go ahead now and I'm trying not to stress.
How often do your kids pick up viruses that cause fevers for days?
The consultant said most of the time the viruses he's picked up cause nothing more than a snotty nose.
