6 week old very constipated- any suggestions to help?

Hello!
My 6 week old baby is super constipated!
He is formula fed (I still breastfeed him once a day) and I dont know what to do to help him!
Ive tried warm baths, massages, adding extra water to the formula mix (like half an oz), I lift his legs and try and move them to get things going- what else can I do?
I also have been drinking loads so that when he breastfeeds its good for him.

Any suggestions would be greatly received!
Thank you

Times have probably moved on, but 20 years ago my health visitor suggested prune juice - it worked.

ABetterOblivion · 16/04/2020 14:20

See the GP. Don’t give him prune juice though!

Can you up your BF's a little?

DrWAnker · 16/04/2020 14:21

Youtube videos will show you a massage technique which helped us. Our keyworker at nursery showed us.
You go out in a circle from the tummy button, following intestine..it's very good.

DrWAnker · 16/04/2020 14:21

Also cycle legs gently..can just help to get things moving.

And 'cycle legs' gently while doing what @DrWAnker said..used to work at treat for Dd2 (I second 'No' to the prune juice, far too young)

Grin xpost!

Is he actually constipated, or has he reached the part where they don't poo for days? No one tells you about that phase.

bonjourbonjour · 16/04/2020 15:45

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I could try and up the bfeeding but not sure there is much left in there. When I breastfeed him he gets angry after a while because there isnt enough milk so I always have to top him up.

Will look at the youtube videos now and see if I can make my massages better.

I think they are still meant to poo every day at 6 weeks old?
When it comes out he pushes a lot and its kind of like toothpaste consistency. I remember it being a bit more liquid than that but my other 2 were breastfed more so it might be different.

Ill update if anything works! Im desperate for him to go!

Your baby is not constipated, formula poo is toothpasty, brest fed is runny. Constipation does not nean how often he goes, its the consistency. Constipated babies have very hard pellets tricky to pass. A bottle fed baby may also have a bit of a song and dance about passing stools but as long as its paste not rocks you are ok

Please stop being desperate, this is NORMAL

RhymingRabbit3 · 16/04/2020 15:53

Formula fed babies can go 3 or 4 days without pooping. If the poo is soft then he is not constipated. Apart from not going every day, are there signs that he is uncomfortable, because if not just leave him to it.

EventRider1 · 16/04/2020 15:59

My health visitor warned me that around the 6 week mark it is completely normal for babies not to poo for a few days. If you are worried, give your HV a call.

Mummy2bePL · 17/04/2020 20:59

@bonjourbonjour
I thought exactly the same. Turns out my daughter wasn’t constipated. Health visitor said that some babies poo every day and some don’t. My daughter would go three or four says before pooing. As long as the poo isn’t hard then she will not be constipated . It’s okay to worry I’m a ftm and I thought exactly the same. She is now 8 weeks and seems to be more regular .

bonjourbonjour · 18/04/2020 09:10

Yep dont think he was constipated. And he has now been twice and it was normal consistency.

Thank you all for reassuring me! X
