Hi can anyone help, for the last three days my ds age 3 has had a red pin prick rash on his thighs, stomach and back, now in neck and buttocks. In himself he has no other symptoms apart from snotty nose and mild cold symptoms. GP tested urine and spoke to pead team but as he has no fever and other wise well in self are not doing any further tests. I think they are assuming it’s viral but we must monitor and do back in 7 days if still there. This rash does not fade under glass. He is not sleepy very energetic and eating and drinking and toilet as normal. I also thought most viral rashes would blanch?? Has anyone else ever experienced this with their child and it been the same and nothing serious. I am very concerned as bad for 4 days and not going? Thanks

My son has had similar and his was a heat rash. we found it to clear up after a few days. He gets it as soon as the weather turns nice and When we put him sun lotion on.

Heat rash here as well. Dd gets it badly when she’s got suncream on. Have you tried anti-histamine? That usually calms dd’s right down.

Don’t think it’s heat rash as it isn’t itchy and does not blanch it’s also flat x

Ds used to get that. It was always a viral rash, but not they didn't blanch.
Only thing was we were always sent to A&E for a blood test to confirm this.

Hi, did the rash not blanch or vanish under glass?
Also when your ds has it did he have other symptoms? Thank you I’m so worried xxx

Hi,
When ds had it, he was normally as happy as Larry and apparently well, which was a bit embarrassing sat in A&E.
Occasionally he had a mild temperature.
He got a whole different variety of viral rashes, and a number of them didn't vanish under glass.

What I was told, was that it was very unlikely to be meningitis because the rash, if it comes at all, tends to be a later symptom and by then they are clearly very unwell.
However they did also want to check it wasn't symptomatic of other things, but his blood results were always "abnormal in the way you want them to be"-showing a virus.

Thank you. How long did the spots take to
fade ? Also how old was your ds when he had blood test? My 3 year old is so anxious and would welcome any tips xx

He first had them at 10 weeks old, by 3yo he had had numerous blood tests for them.
They put something known as magic cream (ds is allergic so doesn't have that) which numbs the area. Then at 3yo you sit them cuddled tightly into you facing with their hand behind you so the can't see what's happening.
Ds is so I bothered by them that by 6yo he was watching and asking questions.

The rashes often took a few days to fade, but sometimes they were quicker.

So unbothered, not bothered

That’s good to hear that he’s a brave little one. My son has had his red pink Prick rash 7 days it worries me a lot. Xx

Could it be itp? Has he had bloods? I would ask about it.
Itp (immune thrombocytopenic purpura) is an autoimmune condition where the body starts to attack platelets in the blood, often after a minor virus. It presents with a non blanching rash, often on legs. Children are otherwise well. It's not common but arises in toddlers not hugely infrequently. Usually gets better on its own but treatment may be needed if platelets fall too low.
Attaching pics of my DS's legs when he had itp; this was a few days later than onset when the rash was fading.

I was also going to say some form of thrombocytopenia. I have it, but not ITP.
When my son was born he had the pinprick rash on his legs too due to low platelets.

Jaylou7 · 22/04/2020 20:25

Hi @Callimanco sorry to hear your son had this and thank you for commenting. My sons rash was literally tiny pink pricks on inner thighs tummy back and arm pits. It’s faded a lot. No bloods done. Xx

Hi @ofwarren thank you for replying. Did your son need treatment for it? This condition you have does it make you have pin prick rash? X

ofwarren · 22/04/2020 20:41

Hi, there was no treatment needed for the rash. It just got better itself eventually. With me, I still have low platelets on and off but not low enough to cause issues, except in pregnancy. I can get pin prick rash when it's low though.
My son still gets it round his eyes if he's sick or has a bad cough.

Jaylou7 · 22/04/2020 20:59

Thank you @ofwarren it is reassuring to hear that someone else is aware of it xx
