Leukemia worries in teenage son

Hi there I have not been on here for sometime now. I have suffered from health anxiety over the years, always fearing the worst and diagnosing myself with all sorts. I managed to get it under control mainly by not Googling but it has been hard recently as I lost my sister to cancer last year.

HOWEVER, I now have it over my son. He is 13, grew a lot over the winter upwards but not outwards so was looking noticeably thin. Not a concern in itself but he had a couple of upset stomachs in quick succession plus feeling nauseaous from time to time so we went to see the GP. She was not concerned about his weight at all, did a physical exam and as a precaution sent us to the hospital for bloods, mainly to check for Coeliac disease. These came back as normal aside from very slightly low white blood cells. I was told this was not a concern but to get the blood test repeated at some point. My husband had this when he last had bloods done too so I did not take much notice and wasn't worried. Over the weekend when it was hot, my son noticed a cluster of a pin prick rash around his knees on both legs. Not itchy but definitely under the skin and did not go when a glass as pressed over it. I'm afraid to say I Googled (yes I know..) more out of interest and found out it was a condition called Petechial and off I went down the rabbit hole of Leukemia!!

I am now convinced he has it and the blood test must have been done when it was in the early stages. He was very hot at night for the last 2 night so that fits as another symptom..otherwise he is fit and appears healthy, eating me out of house and home and managing 4 mile walks with us and sports in the garden with no complaints. I know I need to wait until the blood test is done again ( next week) but I am beside myself. I feel sick and cannot get it out of my mind.

Can someone talk some sense into me please?? Any advice or virtual slaps would be welcome!

It's a terrible wait and I've been there. A few years back my 2 year old never seemed well. Constantly ill, and ticking alot of boxes which I later learned were symptoms of Leukemia. I will never ever forget that call we had from the doctors, 'am I speaking to the parent of........' I burst into tears and said it's his blood isnt it. What's been found. We were called back to the doctors to be told his lymphocytes were too high and indicates something is going on with his body. Thankfully they weren't raised enough for hospital admission but enough to put him immediately on a stronger course of antibiotics to be retested in 10 days and if still raised he would be admitted. It was the worst 10 days and I'm pretty sure it's when my health anxiety started. Thankfully his next test his levels were in an acceptable range.

Sorry I have no real advice for you, but as a health anxiety sufferer I know how hard it is to easily think the worst. I was convinced my son had it especially after the first blood results. But everything turned out fine

What does that tell you? Logically?

We have had experience of leukaemia in my family. What you describe does not match our experience in any way.

Speaking as a parent of a child who had leukaemia twice, honestly, I don't think it's leukaemia. The petechial bruising always appeared later on when there were a lot of other symptoms already. They also tended to appear on the softer fleshy parts like the stomach first. Our child was absolutely exhausted and barely able to get out of bed by the time the petechial bruising appeared. Also, the bruising happens because the platelets just aren't there any more as the blood is crowded out by leukaemia cells, so he'd be breathless, pale, clammy and just obviously very unwell.

You don't say how long ago the last bloods were done, but from our experience the leukaemia would show up on blood tests at least a month before petechial bruising, or even months earlier depending on the tests they run.

I'm sure there is a much more reasonable explanation. Your son sounds far too healthy to be having petechial bruising from leukaemia.

Thanks all for the helpful comments. I know it probably seems crazy to some of you that I am thinking this but when you have HA it is very hard to break the cycle of thinking the worst. Coupled with being stuck indoors all day with no work to take my mind off it, it has been a tough few days! I do feel better now and am going to do my best to not dwell on it x

OP, don't worry, I think it's this lockdown. I have given my kids all sorts of illnesses!!
Doesn't sound concerning at all if he is eating and active,

I hope he is feeling better. For the record dad had leukaemia and it was found in a routine blood test - he had no symptoms of anything (slight bruises but he and I both bruise easily anyway). So if there was anything of that nature I’m sure they would have called him back pronto (dad had the test taken one day and was at the hospital the next).

Being stuck indoors is a nuisance! Sorry about your sister - that must be on your mind.
