Nighttime cough

Hi all, looking for some advice/reassurance. My 11 month old has a cough, only at night and it seems only when she first wakes up from a sleep? Sometimes it’s once and done others it’s a bad “fit”. We had her checked back in jan/feb a couple of times and her chest was always clear. They always said it was a bug. Obviously with what’s going on I’d like to avoid the Drs. Can this be linked to teething? There’s no asthma in either side of the family at all. Please help

I noted DD1 had a cough Christmas Eve, then realised in April she still had it.
Dr diagnosed asthma, very mild, and put her on preventive medication
She grew out of it.

Im having the same with my 15 month old. A few people said it could be teething and he has had 4 teeth break through so would make sence!

ncdoddy · 13/04/2020 22:23

Having same issue here, our little one is now coughing every single night and often it leads to vomiting.

Consultant referral is helpfully not for four months. GP is useless.

Can anyone help?

Both DC had this and our GP recommended the blue inhaler (Salbutamol) to stop the persistent coughing. It was never suggested it was asthma and that both would grow out of it - they did. I think j they were both about 2 1/2 when the inhalers were prescribed.

ncdoddy · 13/04/2020 22:34

Thanks Starlight.

Did you use the inhaler just before bedtime and was it also used if they had a coughing fit in the night?

Blueuggboots · 13/04/2020 22:41

We've had this for years and he was given an inhaler which he reacted badly too. Was the put on montelukast but never actually diagnosed with asthma - only ever has a cough, never wheezy.
I've stopped all the meds and bought him an air purifier first his room. He hardly ever coughs now!!

Hi blueuggboots

We tried an air purifier but I don’t think it was a very good one. May I ask which one you used?

Thanks

I had this with my son from when he was a baby. I took him to the gp multiple times and no one took me seriously. I always got told he would grow out of it. Whhe he was 5 I eventually managed to get referred to ENT and it turned out he had sleep apnea and had his tonsils and adenoids removed. I'm not saying this is what's wrong with your dc, just that you should go back to the gp if it continues and you're not happy. I feel so guilty that it took over 4 years for my ds to get help.

Thanks CupCupGoose

Our son has actually had tonsillitis four times in the past 6 months, so that could be part of the problem.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but how would we be able to tell if he has sleep apnea?

CupCupGoose · 14/04/2020 12:40

With my son, he had a sleep study done. We collected a monitor from the hospital and did it at home. You put a little thing on their finger or toe and it measures their oxygen levels over night. Until he had this done, I had no idea it was sleep apnea and even said to my husband I very much doubt it was that. The only sign we had was the coughing at night. He also seemed to have lots of colds and croup.

CupCupGoose · 14/04/2020 12:40

He had the op just over a year ago and apart from when he's been ill, he hasn't coughed over night once!

ncdoddy · 14/04/2020 13:13

That is hugely helpful, thank you so much.

Given that it isn't possible for us to see a consultant at present and given that the GP has ruled out any link to the tonsils (!), I wonder if getting one of these monitors ourselves is the way to go? Although I suppose we won't know what the results are without a medical professional?

Certainly something to research though. Thanks a lot and glad your son is better now.

starlight36 · 14/04/2020 21:18

Sorry just saw the question about the inhaler - we only used it when they woke up coughing but it helped to stop the coughing escalating into a full-on coughing fit where they would get upset or start being sick.
