Baby 16 weeks (4 months in 8 days) and still cross eyed?

I uploaded a pic of DD to her grandmother earlier when i noticed one eye was definitely 'cross eyed' or pointing more towards her nose.

I know she's not quite 4 months yet, but, everything i read up about what she should be doing by then (she does everything else) states that, that should be gone and to be concerned if it's not.

I then went on her old pictures and noticed literally every single picture has it. Always the same eye, now, im pretty worried lol. My DP seems to think it's no big deal and it'll go away on its own but reading up about it states not getting it sorted ASAP can cause it to become weak and not function properly and now im just super anxious about it.

Anyone else's DC had cross eyes still at this age and it resolved by itself? Or, if not, whaf was the case? Am i over reacting? Or AIBU to state that i want to get it checked out??

Yes my dd was at 4-5 months. Gp referred her to hospital and she was eye patching and wearing glasses at 7 months. At 6 year old, both the patching and glasses were no longer needed. She still has a very mild squint. They say only surgery will correct it but she is still very young and it's not really noticeable.
Def take your child to the dr and get a referral. You obviously will want to wait though in the current climate

Hi, my DD had this and the HV referred us to Moorfields for checks. Her squint did resolve itself but they took it seriously and had her back for extra checks later (and her little sister too!) I would speak to your HV.

PinPon · 10/04/2020 22:56

Take your baby to an optician for an eye check after social distancing rules are lifted. My DC had a similar issue which was resolved by wearing patches on the stronger eye to force the wandering one to focus.

Tjsmumma · 10/04/2020 23:13

@ladybirdsarelovely33 thank you so much for your response! Did you notice it all the time or only when she focused on something? It seems to be more when she is focused on my camera lens lol, i never notice it without that, she can track things with both eyes etc. Ill definitely call up tomorrow and get a referal in. Now super worried

@minipie did she need anything doing to it to resolve it? Or did it go by itself? X

@PinPon yes, i think i shall! Assuming its not overly urgent to take her asap? Was it always wondering or just when they were focused on something more? No surgery needed im assuming?

Hi Tjsmumma it resolved by itself, by 6 months, no treatment in her case.

She does have an underlying condition we found out about later, which possibly caused the squint, but there were other signs of that not just the eye.

Tjsmumma · 10/04/2020 23:25

@minipie Oh that's fab to hear! Glad it resolved for her, i did read it can by 6 months but to mention it if it hasnt by 4! I was told about pseudosquints in another thread and i think its more that than a lazy eye but unsure really. Would you say this is similar to your DC?

Yes my DC was more like the pseudo picture, in fact it was the HV who notices her squint, much to my embarrassment I hadn’t noticed anything... although now when I look at photos I can see it.

Tjsmumma · 10/04/2020 23:44

@minipie did the hv do another routine check up? I was told i wouldbt be seen again by them now 😳 did you get a test done that showed it was a 'true' squint as such? All the photos show similar to the photo i uploaded

No the HV didn’t do any checks, she referred us to the opthalmology clinic at the local hospital (Moorfields local clinic) and they did a check. By the time we got the appt DD was 6 months and the squint was gone so I never found out more about it. She had another check at 2 years which I think Moorfields do as standard for any referral.

Tjsmumma · 10/04/2020 23:55

Ah sorry, must of misread! We got signed off by HV at 6 week check and said she wouldn't be back til 12 month check which isnt even by her. That makes sense, glad to hear it had resolved by itself though and no intervention was needed for your DD! Ill get onto HV in the morning and see what they suggest given everything going on, if its worth waiting until she's 6 months to see if it resolves on own by then or if its worth putting referal in ready. Thank you so much for your response!

Dd2 had a squint. Hers alternates so patching doesn’t work anyway. She wore glasses from about 2 and had surgery at 7 to correct. It’s pretty common. If it’s just one eye and occasional then just get it checked in a few months when everything is open. Plenty of time.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 11/04/2020 00:14

DS had a squint, he had patches at primary school and glasses, an operation at 5 and a second op at 8, and will probably have to wear glasses all his life, but he has an astigmatism as well as the squint so it's not just the squint that is the problem. He still has a mild squint when he's tired or unwell, but he's decided to live with it.

underneaththeash · 11/04/2020 22:22

Are you worried about one eye pointing in or pointing out?
Could you post the picture of her eyes OP (obviously cut the rest of it out). It would be especially useful if it has the corneal relexes in it - so the little spots if light that you sometimes see in photos.
It’s the easiest way to tell the difference between actual squint and a pseudo squint at this age.

Tjsmumma · 12/04/2020 10:00

@underneaththeash pointing inwards, she never eber does it normally only notice it in pics have been keeping an eye (lol no pun intended)

Could you post another image the correct way round with a bit of flash, so that I can see the corneal reflections better.

Like the image half way down this page

Perfect - that looks like a pseudosquint to me!
ie. nothing to worry about.
I would get it checked properly after all this is over, but it can definitely wait.

Tjsmumma · 12/04/2020 15:25

@underneaththeash ah brilliant! Thank you! I was thinking the same after some research! Ill call uo and get an appointment after all this is done with as dont want to risk it at the moment! Thank you again!
