Hi, my LO has chickenpox and is generally coping really we using virasooth but he has now developed blisters all around his bum and anus which I don't think you can use the virasooth spray on. We have used sudocream but nothing is working, Has anyone got some suggestions, he is so uncomfortable.

Calamine lotion maybe?

Piriton as well.

I’m sure I’ve read you should not use ibuprofen when they have chickenpox as it can make it worse, so Calpol if they need it.

Hope he gets better soon.

thanks, I've got calamine lotion and I I'll see if I can get any piriton syrup today. Shops aren't well stocked and it's not easy to drive around to everywhere because of the lockdown. My main concern is all the sprays and creams tend to say "not for use around genitals" but that's where he is in the most pain and distress. We calmed him with damp cold cotton pads last night but I'm hoping for a better solution.

I wouldn't use sudocrem as it can be about stingy on sores and calamine might be worse when it dries - vaseline for now and ask a pharmacist? Maybe call them for advice before going to save driving round. I'm thinking the yellow metanium bum cream might help and I recall using a mix of camomile tea with a bit of honey and a dash of lavender oil to clean his bum when my eldest had really bad bum flare up as a baby. I think something like vaseline would create a barrier to stop anything aggravating it and then just leave nappy off for a bit to help dry out.

Head and shoulders original used in the bath is supposed to help dry them out.

Piriton or own brand equivalent and oat baths worked great for us.

No advice but lots of sympathy, we are going through the same right now 😢

Maybe spray a cotton pad and dab it in a small area on his bum and leave him bare for half an hour or so to let the 'patch test' area dry. If all's ok try a different area leaving dry and using pads so the spray isn't going everywhere.

Oat baths helped my two a lot, especially for baby bum spots! They’re horrid!
I got a muslin cloth and cut it into four squares; in each put a handful of oats and ten drops each of lavender oil and tea tree oil. Lavender is anti inflammatory and tea tree is antiseptic - I was recommended both of these by my midwife for sits baths after giving birth and they definitely helped with healing and soothing! Tie up the cloth tightly and put it under the tap while you’re running the bath, give it a good squish too, to get lots of starch into the water.
I hope things improve for you both soon!

Mix some corn flour into the calamine lotion it will thicken up and then paint the child with it. Help my two when they had it
