Coughing during sleep

Hi,

I am a long time lurker, but have just created an account to see what other people think of this situation. May be a long read but any help or ideas greatly appreciated!

My daughter is 13 months old, breastfed for 2 weeks but I had extreme pain and constant feeding ( constant not just cluster feeding) despite being told by experts that latch was really good, switched to formula, initially OK, however went on to to scream before bottles and refuse to drink, we ended up constantly feeding her small amounts throughout the day as she would never drink a full bottle, by 4 months it was a struggle to get 2 ounces at a time in. After reading mumsnet I realised she had all the signs of tongue tie. Diagnosed with posterior tongue tie which was snipped, feeding improved but still never a big drinker. Born on 50th centile dropped to 9th and roughly stayed there.

Skip forward to more recently, around Christmas time (10 months old) she started to develop a cough at night time and nap times, we saw doctors twice about this in the next 4-8 weeks and were told everything was fine and probably a virus. She started nursery in late January one day a week so seemed plausible.

She is now 13 months old, last weighed in November and around 9th centile, still in 6-12 month clothes so hasn't had a massive growth spurt since, generally a good eater, but still dislikes milk and will now only have around 2-3 ounces of formula when she wakes up each day. Her coughing is now getting much worse during sleep, despite being sat at an angle in the pushchair for naps she can cough every minute or so and is usually woken up after about 30 minutes by a coughing fit, then wakes screaming as she is still tired but can't get back to sleep. Overnight she mixes between coughing when she goes to sleep and going to sleep happily, but always ends up waking in the middle of the night coughing and crying. She has recently been waking up at 4-5am coughing and then can't get back to sleep (she used to be a very good sleeper and sleep solidly for 12 hours).

She also has very dry skin which we moisture 2-3 times a day and has red bumps on her legs and sometimes arms which purely from googling looks like eczema. I have spoken to the go last week, although on the phone not in person due to the coronavirus and they thought the cough may still be from a virus she had at Christmas and prescribed a blue inhaler which we have been giving before naps and bed. This doesn't seem to be making any difference. I didn't mentioned her past issues with feeding or her skin but after looking online am now wondering about various things that this could be and thinking they may all be linked. Frequently coming up are asthma, allergies, cmpa (not sure if too old though?) and lactose intolerance.

She doesn't itch her skin and is on the whole a very happy girl, always on the go and hitting all milestones as she should, but the coughing is really ruining her sleep and doesn't feel right. She has also had a Runny nose for the past few weeks. Just to add we do have a long haired cat.

Sorry this is so long, but has anyone else had anything similar? I am going to call the doctors again this week to let them know about the inhaler not helping, but not sure if any of my theories are worth mentioning?

If anyone is still reading, thank you!

The inhaler (assuming salbutamol) is what you would try for evolving asthma, or indeed for allergies... Gastro oesophageal reflux might be a possibility?

Myfriendanxiety · 22/03/2020 22:12

My 12 month old is the same! Cough since Xmas and a constant runny nose. Cough much worse at night which GP said is the mucus but now I’m terrified tonight’s coughing is coronavirus and so I can’t sleep.

Helpwithcough01 · 22/03/2020 22:21

@nocoolnamesleft thanks, yes inhaler is salbutamol, a gp we saw before tongue tie was diagnosed did think she might have mild reflux, but she's never been a sicky baby. I will read up about gastro
Oesophagalephogal reflux.

@Myfriendanxiety I hope your baby gets better soon and we find out what is causing it. I'm not too concerned that this is to do with coronavirus as it has been going on for so long and she hasn't had a fever. I just want to get the coughing resved!

My son always had a Night cough and runny nose when he was little. Also eczema and Would suffer viral wheeze when unwell.

Eventually got allergy tested and he is very highly allergic to house dust mits.

Try washing all bedding Weekly on 60, avoid any unnecessary soft furnishings such as rugs, teddies, curtains. We also use protectors on his pillow mattress and duvet.

Waterlemon · 22/03/2020 22:23

If she is allergic you will see a reduction in symptoms. (By bedding I mean wash the duvet and pillow too if she uses them)

Helpwithcough01 · 22/03/2020 22:33

@waterlemon that's really interesting as sounds quite similar, thank you! Did the gp refer you for allergy testing or did you need to get it done privately?

Luckily we have shutters not curtains and no rugs, but I will make sure I start washing everything at 60 more regularly, she is still in a grobag but we have the cot right next to our bed so our duvet and pillows may be affecting her. Does your son need any medication or has he improved on his own with the extra washing and less furnishings?
