Tics

Hello all,

I'm just looking for some reassurance more than anything tbh.

My son developed a tic last year. It comes and goes and is worse when he is having a period of difficulty at his school.

However, each time the tic reappears, its a different one

First it was throat clearing, then it was a yawn like tic and now it's an eye spasm.

And they never happen simultaneously either.

Any other parents who's children have tics experience this?

I'm just wondering if they're likely to be different each time based on someone else's experience.

Many thanks

Hi. My son who's now 13 has had tics on and off since he was 2. They have varied and changed, including eye blinking, shoulder shrugging, mouth stretching, raising eyebrows, sniffing etc. They were probably at their worse when he was about 5 or 6 and ha e been much better over the past few years.

I think my son will be very similar. Thank you so much for sharing. It eases my mind somewhat

My son had a cough/clearing throat tic 2 years ago. Lasted few months and disappeared. Few weeks ago it came back, but fading away now. He did develop a new one few days ago. Like a shrug or a shiver in his shoulder/back. I try to ignore but I'm obsessing about it and i feel anxious. I just need some reassurance.

My dd had a tic for a while when being bullied at school, and therefore very stressed. She was five/six. It just gradually stopped once the situation was sorted out and she hasn’t had a repeat. (She is 15 now.)

Yes my 7 year old has had a few different ones, at the moment its opening his mouth wide. In the past it was going hmmm and also making a hhhh forceful exhalation. I saw a paediatrician about it, he wasnt bad enough to be diagnosed with anything but I was reassured that I was handling it in the right way. Dont draw attention, do let teachers know so they dont inadvertently get into trouble, and talk about feelings.

Hi

My kids have all had (still have) tics. They are a bit irritating to me (sorry but true) but having read around the subject i realise they're nothing to worry about and now i ignore them.

They have varied from flapping, throat clearing, wide mouth opening, glancing up or the the side, head rolling like trying to click neck. God loads haha

All bright healthy sociable high functioning kids.
they just happen to tic.

For two of them there is a definite link to being a bit stressed but the other one does it as a self soothing mechanism like thumb sucking.

Try not to worry x

It's really hard not to worry. How old are your kids? Did they have more at same time? I really need some reassurance as I'm losing my mind worrying.
This one like shoulder shiver only started few days ago. My son is very worrying child but very bubbly and happy. Just worries too much. I really hope this will be gone soon. This lockdown doesnt help.

My teen DS has had tics for a few years which got much worse after the last lockdown. We saw our GP who referred us to paediatrics; they said they’re really common and will likely resolve in time. They’ve also seen an increase since the pandemic. My DS is aware of them and I’ll be keeping an eye on them for now. If you’re worried I would speak to your GP.
