Is this tonsillitis? (picture included)

My DS hasn’t been well for the past couple of days, has complained of a sore throat but was just red, no white spots. Today he’s been sick a few times and at some points his temp has been 41.4. I took another look at his throat and it looks like this, is this tonsillitis?. In the pictures I’ve googled the white spots are smaller?. The GP’s are closed near me, so can’t get an appointment. Shall I take him to a walk in centre and try and get some antibiotics for him or is it treatable at home?. He’s still got a temp but it’s gone down a bit now, is taking lots of fluids but is struggling to eat because of the pain in his throat so has just had scrambled egg, soups etc. Sorry if I sound clueless, he’s my first so I’ve not dealt with this before.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/03/2020 14:37

**needs

DirtyTicket · 07/03/2020 14:39

Yes. My eldest daughter suffered terribly with tonsillitis. Your son definitely needs to be seen by a doctor or nurse prescriber. Best wishes.

alwaysscared · 07/03/2020 14:39

Wow, that looks so painful. Definitely get him to the walk in centre, they should be able to give antibiotics

Fairylea · 07/03/2020 14:41

Definitely tonsillitis and needs antibiotics today.

crosser62 · 07/03/2020 14:43

So you say he is drinking plenty, is able to swallow soft foods, has a temperature.
Are you giving him painkillers for the sore throat?
How old is he and is he a usually fit and well child?
Is he his normal self? Playing, happy in himself?

Canshopwillshop · 07/03/2020 14:44

I would definitely take him to be seen and get some antibiotics.

nosleepp · 07/03/2020 14:48

Okay thank you!. Will be straight to the walk in.

@crosser62 he’s 3, so has been having calpol. He is usually fine, gets the occasional cold or stomach bug but nothing out of the ordinary for a nursery child. He’s been sleeping most of the day but isn’t his normal self at all.

Thank you everyone. I feel stupid for not taking him down sooner but these spots must’ve appeared over night. Am going to the walk in now I will update you all when I get back. Thank you.

Don’t feel stupid!
This is my child every month or so, I’ve never given him antibiotics and have only ever taken him to the nurse once to confirm my home remedy treatment is correct.
Fluids, calpol for pain, soft foods and carry on as usual.
Luckily my child is never unwell with it, smelly breath, strange voice change but eating, drinking and happy in himself.
Huge pus filled tonsils but never ill, totally totally bizarre.

I double checked with the ent surgeon at work who agreed and reassured me. So you are not being stupid.

alwaysscared · 07/03/2020 15:04

You aren't stupid. It's so hard to know what to do when they are poorly because taking them to the docs or walk in when they are feeling shite is horrible for them anyway. I tend to just do home remedies myself but if tonsils looked like that I would go

FourDecades · 07/03/2020 15:22

Can get throat spray to numb the pain too

nosleepp · 07/03/2020 16:12

Hi, just got back now. He has tonsillitis, it’s bacterial not a virus so was able to have antibiotics. He’s on a 10 day course of antibiotics and I’ve got one of them throat sprays to help with the pain. Thank you everyone

Try and teach him how to gargle. He's young, but you never know! Saltwater gargles were a staple in my house, all prone to tonsillitis. Helps keep it at bay, and reduces the swelling a bit.

Canshopwillshop · 07/03/2020 16:58

Oh bless him. Hope he feels better soon.

Fairylea · 07/03/2020 17:20

Aw poor him. It’s so nasty, I never felt so unwell as when I’ve had tonsillitis. Hope he feels better soon Flowers

CottonSock · 07/03/2020 17:22

That looks proper nasty. Glad you could get him seen

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/03/2020 17:39

How do they know it's bacterial and not viral?

Glad he was seen OP and hope the antibiotics work quickly and he starts to feel better. I agree salt water swooshing and gargling is great.

nosleepp · 07/03/2020 17:52

Thank you everyone. I will try salt water gargling

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor they did a swab of his throat and could tell by that.

Just going to say that looks exactly like bacterial tonsillitis. Poor little one. Antibiotics should work quick enough.

jesslambo88 · 12/03/2020 06:48

Our little boy is 19 months and had the same since Tuesday...he's not been well at all and is on the same 10 day antibiotics and calpol/ibuprofen to keep his temp down...feel so sorry for them xxx
