My DD is 2, I'm a single mum so now one to bounce off. Today she has all of a sudden become very upset, doesn't want to be put down....which is totally unusual for her she is not a cuddly child at all. She is hot to touch and just checked her temp and it says 38.4. I've stripped her down to nappy. She is asleep on me with a little blanket. She keeps waking herself up by jerking, like when u fall asleep to fast. Given her paracetamol. What do i do people? Do I wait it out or take her to A&e? Sorry if this is a silly question but I suffer with anxiety and being on my own with my first child this is my first experience of her being sick that isn't just straight forward like a cold or conjunctivitis. Thanks xx

Here’s the NHS advice.

You don’t need to strip her off. Put her clothes back on.
Try and keep her hydrated. I give my little one fruit pouches. But anything she’ll eat / drink. Let her rest. Lots of telly. Lots of cuddles.

Thanks, she seems a little better now she has had a little sleep. Still wants cuddles, but that's ok with me Smile

A temp of 38.4 is a fever but not too worrying. I'd give calpol to take the temp down and maybe offer an ice lolly if she fancies one. But I wouldn't strip her down at that temp. Enjoy the cuddles!

swingchandelier · 29/02/2020 17:25

That’s a very mild fever. My daughters was at 40.3 when she was ill! Numerous doctors have told me it doesn’t matter what the temperature is what matters is how they are I.e do they look desperately ill or are they ill but Ok. Follow the NHS guidelines, give her some Calpol and she should be fine soon.

gallgal · 29/02/2020 17:29

If the temp doesn't come down give her ibuprofen on top of the Nurofen, that's what they would do in A&E anyway

gallgal · 29/02/2020 17:29

On top of the calpol, sorry!

This is really tough to do alone. You don't need to go to a and e but call 111 if you are worried and they will guide you from there. Sounds like she is doing ok and next time will be a little easier knowing she was fine this time.

TwinkleMerrick · 29/02/2020 18:13

Thanks, I've managed to put some light pjs on her and transfer her to her cot. She is sleeping now. I keep checking on her, and will do through the night. We still share a room. It's so tough, alone or not alone. Even worse when u suffer with anxiety and thoughts spiral out of control. Thanku for all your support xx

Hope she is ok! Has she had chicken pox before? Sometimes it starts with a fever and irritability and then spots few days later.
If she hasn't had them, don't give her any ibroprofen.. just Incase it turns out to be them

ThankyouwithacapitalR · 29/02/2020 18:23

You're doing great, does she have a favorite bottle or cup to drink out of to encourage her to keep hydrated? I second ice lollies and basically anything she will eat or drink and alternating calpol & nuerofen. If you get worried, phone 111 its it's what they're there for xx

namesneeded · 29/02/2020 18:29

Oh it's so horrible seeing them poorly, I have a two year old and I worry like you are currently whenever he is poorly.

Don't be afraid to call 111 if you're unsure, and they'll be able to give you advice.

That jerky thing when she goes to sleep, my son had that this week (he had tonsillitis). I think I'm the same when I'm poorly- weird dreams, uncomfortable, struggle to get to sleep. Try not to worry, and it will all feel much better in the morning when it's light again.

I hope she starts to feel better soon

Update, after a 15 hour sleep she has woken up bright and breezy. Fever gone and demanding her milk. Thanku all for ur support xx
