6 year old adult teeth- should it be this painful??

My 6 year old lost her first baby tooth on Monday. It was all fine, she was very excited, didn't complain of pain or anything.

Last night she woke up at around 9pm crying hysterically and was awake pretty much every hour, crying and complaining that her "tooth hurts". She kept pointing to the gap where her baby tooth has just fallen out saying "it hurts here" and you can see a new tooth just starting to poke through the gum. But she's been so distressed, is it normal for adult teeth coming in to cause that much discomfort? I haven't heard of other kids her age being so bothered by it and now wondering if this indicates a problem of some kind.
Of course this would happen on a Friday night when the dentist is closed for two days.

She has just had some cereal and slice of (undercooked) toast although she is still complaining of pain maybe if she's able to eat it can't be too bad? Of course everything is worse at night when you're tired too so that may have contributed to her upset.

If this is normal, does anyone have any idea how long it's likely to go on for? DH is away for the next couple of weeks and I also have a teething 1yo who isn't sleeping! The thought of several sleepless nights spent trying to simultaneously settle two crying, teething DC before dragging myself into work is filling me with dread Sad

It can be normal yes! Assuming it's her molars, they are not as "sharp" as baby teeth and so it takes more pressure to break through the gum.

The pain can also radiate to the jaw, and the nerve that supplies that area can also transfer pain!

Heat pack (not too hot, obviously) and whatever she would normally have for a headache

It's not her molars, no. I know they're usually quite painful. It's one of her bottom front teeth, it's just the permanent one coming in where she's just lost a baby tooth. She also looks deathly pale today and has been very sniffly so now thinking it might be more than just teeth related.
