Stupid questions from anxious mum re virus

First time mum, very anxious around health. She is 16 months.

Dd was off today, after nap temp very high, lethargic, hands cold though. Went down to doctor, he checked her over. Temp was nearly 40. Had been given calpol.

He said virus which is doing the rounds, rest and fluids.

She has had some yogurt and milk, and fallen asleep again.

Temp now at 37.

How do you deal with this overnight?

Do children wake if temperature spikes?

Should I wake her and check her?

Is she likely to be sick, she has cough and snot or is this a cold type virus so sick possible but unlikely?

How long do these types of things last?

Anything I should watch for other than temperature?

Thank you just not sure what to do for the best. She went to bed happily, usual routine but not sure I should be leaving her. Would she be better to cosleep tonight?

Personally, I always have them in with me if they are unwell so I can keep a closer eye on them. I'd keep an eye on her temperature overnight but if she is well in herself I wouldn't be overly concerned. Hopefully she will be on the mend in the morning.

I would check whenever you wake up in the night / set alarms if you’re a deep sleeper to check temperature regularly. Alternate calpol and nurofen.

My youngest is always sick with an infection - your LO May have an ear infection or something so don’t rule out vomiting.

Wet nappies, eating, alert when awake = good signs. Hope all is ok and over it quickly xx

Thank you both.

I'm hot at night so that's why I hesitated re co sleep. I've just checked and temp good.

Lots of wet nappies today and talking milk. Just not herself and temperature earlier was to high.

I just get so worked up.

I worry too which is why I tend to co sleep as otherwise I spend the whole night worrying/getting up to check on them and so get no sleep anyway!

It's completely up to you though. I'd say she definitely needs checking regularly throughout the night but how you do it is up to you.

My eldest has a tendency to be sick when mucous-y so it's a possibility. The only time my eldest has had a temp up in the 40s it was the start of chicken pox so keep an eye out for rashes etc.

Hopefully it's a virus and she'll bounce back quickly. Drinking, alert, wet nappies are all positive.

I used to co-sleep with mine when they were little and I'll. And yes, they tend to wake up and cry if their temperature spikes.

Not much use for tonight, but nurofen make a fever monitor thing that sticks onto them n gives you their temp without disturbing them. Not sure how good they are maybe someone else will be along to recommend or condemn them but I picked one up in savers for £13 the other day to add to the kit.

I haul the travel cot out n pop ds in our room if he’s not right, if it’s a cold type virus and she hasn’t thrown up yet you might be safe on that front. Humidity helps the cough n loosens the snot too.. even a damp towel on the radiator for tonight would work. Ds usually goes for about a week with a cold like virus but you can see him pickin up after a day or two just the end of the snotty stuff takes the longest.

My dd 7 is like this at the moment, was fine all day, a bit pale maybe , said she had cold hands, and she felt tired, her head was hot and has a temp of 38.5, she’s been eating fine, drinking and apart from being her usual whiny herself nothing else appeared not normal. Gave her kids nurofen and they usually sleep right through the night if I give them medicine before bed. Best thing is to just keep an eye, not much else you can do really unless her fever spikes again.

Thank you all.

Have been up and down since Thursday and then this morning I just couldn't shake a feeling she needed to be seen. Went to out of hours and she has tonsillitis so has been given antibiotics.

Home now and having a sleep. Poor baby.
