Autism - what are the chances

My partner has 3 siblings - one brother from the same father, and one older brother and sister from their Mum's first marriage (they're twins). Both his older (half) siblings from their mum's first marriage got children. His brother has an autistic son, and his sister has two children, one with ASD.
I read that there's 1.5% chance in any family for autism, and 19% for the second child is the first one was born with ASD. I have a friend who has a brother and both his children got severe autism.
I would like to know what are the chances if my partner and I had a baby? Is the fact that two of his sibling have children with ASD a coincidence, or can it run in the broader family? Thank you for your answers.

I have 1 ds, my brother has twins, DS & dd, all 3 children are autistic. I am also autistic & have strong thoughts that my dm is as well. I have read that twins have a higher incidence of Autism & babies born by cs also have a higher chance of being autistic.

I would say it's not a coincidence, these siblings all share the same mother so the chance is that it came from her gene pool, and is there any chance that any of the siblings themselves are autistic but without diagnosis? My ds is autistic, my nephew is and my niece is suspected of it but high functioning and harder to diagnose in girls. My husband definitely has autistic traits so it could have came from either side of our family but really who gives a crap, are you not going to have a baby at all with this person because there is a chance of autism? There is a chance of anything with any baby, there is a chance of down syndrome, a chance of hole in the heart, a chance of blah blah. The unknown is scary but it shouldn't be enough that it makes your decision for you of becoming parents.

My son has been diagnosed with autism, I feel my niece and mum may have it too although neither have been diagnosed

Well, my DN is autistic, his DF has an autistic cousin, my DS is autistic, my DD has ADHD withh AS traits, DB, DF and DGM are / were obviously on the spectrum though too old to be diagnosed and then there is me.

Yes there can be genetic reasons for ASD so with
The diagnosis in family members chances are higher.
So if it s problematic for you then dont risk it and dont have children .

Otoh if you are open to dealing with any issues a child may have then dont let this stop you.

Yes, there is a genetic link. Research is still ongoing.
I've not heard anything about 'odds' that you quote, but there is definitely a genetic link.

BlankTimes · 26/02/2020 01:03

No-one knows enough to be able to give you any reliable odds on any child you have with your partner being autistic.

If you had 5 children with your partner, some may have autism and some may not. It's not something anyone can predict with any accuracy.

Also autism presents quite differently in girls so you may think you have an NT child and at some point, even in their adulthood, discover you don't.

Nanna50 · 26/02/2020 01:58

I think you are hoping that the genetic link is to the twins father and that your DH and his mother are NT. Does your DH, his siblings or mother have any traits?

The paediatrician in our area always quotes a 10% increase in chance of siblings having ASD where a child is already diagnosed. No one can tell you your chances on the internet (if at all)

All 3 of my boys have Autism, I have Aspergers. Two of the boys and myself have a 15q11.2 microdeletion that is linked to autism.

Sometimes a genetic link but unclear enough to say what the chances are your child will be effected and as ASD is on a spectrum unclear to say where they will be on the spectrum.

It’s also worth remembering that ASD isn’t the end of the world even if there is a diagnosis.

Plenty of kids with asd go on to thrive and lead happy lives.
