Ear thermometer reading 35.6. Feeling really worried. Have called 111. Waiting for a call back.
My daughter looks pale and is off food.

Have you taken your own and everyone else in the house temp this evening? This happened to me and I was worried until I realised it was the thermometer.

How old is your daughter? Ear thermometer not recommended under 3 months I think - not sure why, but under arm is more accurate.

My son is routinely 35.8ish with ear thermometer. It's normal for him (so when it's 37ish, that's when he's got a temperature.) There's a range - not all people are exactly 37c.

Does she feel cold? Where are you taking the temp? Underarm is always colder than mouth or ear. As pp said, take your own temp in the same manner and see how it compares.

We get low readings on ear thermometers for my 3 yo son. We were never really concerned ourselves but did take him to the dr after nursery said he had a temp of 34.5 (they had googled and the nhs website had suggested hypothermia and to urgently seek medical attention). The dr told us that children often get a low reading because their ear canals are small and the thermometer isn’t pushed in far enough (she got one low reading and one normal reading) and that low temp is most concerning in elderly people. We know use a variety of thermometers!

That being said, you know your child best. Hope she feels better soon.

My son twice dropped to 34cwhen he was about 12-18 months (he is 12 now so can't remember exactly).
He had been poorly, fever etc. I'd given calpol and then he went cold, he was cold to the touch. It was scary, I called 111 and they actually sent an ambulance. Meanwhile I had been cuddling close with blankets etc.
By the time we were seen I. The hospital (had to wait a bit when got there as obviously not top priority) his temp had returned to normal.

The doctors and nurses did t explain and seemed pretty shrug about it while insisting on getting a pee sample from him so had to wait around for ages with nappy off per pot at the ready...

Anyway, that is all beside the point, sorry. I eventually got a dr to explain that what can happen when small children's bodies are trying to regulate their temperature against fever sometimes the internal thermostat over compensates and they go too far the other way.

It did happen to him once more a few months later, lots of body heat and blankets and he came back to normal.

This factor, combined with recent medical advice (from dr xand on bbc) that fever is the body's tool for fighting infection and shouldn't be brought down for its own sake unless way too high, means that I don't medicate my younger kids for fever.

It is alarming and not something that is spoken about much. Hope your little one warms up and feels better soon.

Thank you all.. sorry I didn't provide much info did I. My daughter is 3 1/2 yrs old. She's on the sofa with me. The house is warm and I've got two duvets on her. I tested the thermometer on me and I am over 37. I'm making sure I'm pushing the thermometer enough. Since being 35.6 she has come up to 36 now.

She has also been not herself since Friday with not eating much at all. I'm waiting for the 111 doc to call me back.

How is your daughter this morning?? What did Nhs say??

We’ve had this a few times with dd. Gentle wanting up and she’s been fine again. I’ve no idea why it happens so am intrigued as to how you got on.

GEEpEe · 19/02/2020 07:45

Please take her to see a doctor. Low temperature, especially in the young or old, can be a sign of co co.plex infection.

SamsMumsCateracts · 19/02/2020 08:03

One of mine used to have low temperatures at night. We eventually discovered that it was because of his sleep apnoea. They took his tonsils and adenoids out and his nightly low temperatures stopped. He permanently looked ill beforehand, but it was chronic poor quality sleep.

Adviceneeded0 · 20/02/2020 16:57

Thank you all for your messages.. we got a call back in the night from 111 doctor. The doctor said if temperature consistently lower than 35.7 we need to be worried. Also if down to 35 we need to be rushing to a&e. My daughter felt warm to the touch the whole time she was like this and even kept kicking her duvet off I kept having to keep covering her up. It was really worrying. I kept getting her to sip a drink. By the morning she was back up to 36.7 and later that day back up to over 37. She had been under the weather days leading to that night but the next day since she's been back to her usual self x

Hi I know this is an old thread! Just wondering @SamsMumsCateracts what was your babies temp at night? My 4mo has been having low temps at night (34.5-35.5) but normal during the day! Did have a temp of 38 a few days ago which came down. Is well in himself no other symptoms so maybe the sleep apnoea thing? He has got reflux and I heard sleep apnoea is assoc. with that
