Appendectomy pain

Hello x

My 12 year old had his inflammed appendix removed. Home, but now and again feels pain. No temp or anything, nothing worrying with all the things you need to look for. But so awful when he cries that it hurts. He's never really had pain and this is really upsetting him. Taking the usual meds, lots water. Was there anything else you did which helped your child? Understand that generally from day 4 post surgery, you see quite a lot improvement. We are day 2. Much better than yesterday and day before, but I cant bear to see him cry. Thank you x

If he has shoulder pain a hot water bottle really helps with that. It works on the tummy as well actually.

We're exactly is the pain? Is it in the incision sites or on the right lower side where he's appendix was?

What pain relief are you giving and how often?

I had abdominal keyhole surgery. I still couldn't stand up straight 2 weeks after the operation.
A friend had a similar opp (still not appendix tho) and was re-tiling the bathroom after 4 days.

Keep taking the paracetamol/ibuprofen, dont move too much.
Heat or cold patches, whatever he prefers - or even alternate.

Hope he's feeling better soon.

When I had my appendix out I had a lot of pain from trapped wind - they fill the area with air during the op and it lodges places and is so sore! Hot water bottles seemed to help as did trying to move around a lot even though that hurt. It does improve pretty quickly!

There is definitely a lot of air, shoulder pain is common. It will go. Keep moving, take regular pain relief. Use a warm towel or buy a wheat bag, don’t put it directly on a wound though. Constipation can be an issue so keep drinking, eat prunes etc.

Your best bet would be to call the ward he was on and ask them - they can advise on what is normal after surgery (and what might help), and what might mean you have to take him back in.
