Migraines in children

Hi,
I have an 11 year old who is currently plagued by headaches.... been told they are migraines. I am at my wits end and very worried as they have become very frequent often with severe vomiting. He has also in the last week had a fainting spell, gastroenteritis, tonsillitis.
We were at the docs 3 times last week, and e Saturday. I have pushed for a referral today from his GP for further testing.
If we go back to a and e, would they do a scan or mri. I am extremely worried that this is something more than a migraine. He has missed over a week of school now were into half term. Has anyone gone through anything similar? Can you reccomend anything to help with this. He has no food allergies. They have changed pattern to becoming more frequent. Could it be hormone related. Help, any advice greatly appreciated Smile x

Migraines in kids are awful - my DD gets them.

It is common for them to change pattern with age, and the big thing is identifying triggers. Dehydration is very common - get him to up his liquids. We were recommended at least 2 litres a day.

Add a Vitamin D supplement each day and watch for too much blue light, late nights etc.

Are you/have you been keeping a headache diary? If not - start. It's the first thing you'll be asked to do.

Also, painkillers at the first warning signs.

Thankyou x
He knows when it starts and asks for his tablets. Sometimes this helps other times it makes no difference and the vomiting starts.
I have a diary I'm just really stressed that hes been so poorly and he has had about 4 in the weeks building up to this gastroenteritis/tonsillitis. He had one Sunday eve severe vomiting and today he said he had one but no vomiting so far.
I think the frequency is what's worrying me, i am constantly telling him to drink more. To eat snacks. Early nights etc.
It's a real drain at the min especially on him.
Hopefully this referral comes soon but if he gets another severe one it might be another trip to a and e.
Will look into the Vit D Smile
X

My son has been plagued by migraines since he was 4, he is now nearly 19 and they are far less frequent thankfully as it was very difficult during secondary school age.
Biggest triggers are anything made with tomatoes, stress, he has glasses that have a tint in the lenses that help glare, computers and school lights were an issue if he forgot to take them.
I don't know how much vomit i have cleaned up over the years, some of his migraines he would be sick others not so.
My son did get clusters of them,he had a CT as an emergency as he lost sensation down one side of his body on a few occassions, he later had a MRI and nothing untoward found.
What is he taking?

Sorry he is going through this!

I suffered terribly since primary age until recently and now get them very rarely maybe 1 a year

Honestly they were so bad I would vomit, loose vision and sensation in my limbs

Had loads of tests and nothing ever showed up (thankfully)

The triggers I have found are

Orange juice or oranges
Cheese
Bright lights
Too much chocolate
And laying on my front (strange but it seems to trigger something in my neck)
Dehydration

There is medication they can give him, knocks you out but is a life savour when they get bad

wekeepgoing · 18/02/2020 19:49

At his age thou I used a nasal spray not the medication

Snowysmama · 18/02/2020 20:04

Thankyou for your replies, currently he is just taking calpol fast melts sometimes ibuprofen. They have mentioned a preventive pitzofen.....whilst his stomach has been so unsettled they didnt advise to start this just yet.
I'm willing to give that a go but would like some kind of scan to put my mind at ease that it isnt anything sinister. I did see the nasal spray in my numerous google searches.
I'm praying this is just a really bad cluster and things will settle soon for him. Maybe he will grow out of these...Here's hoping 🤞 Sometimes you just need to feel like you arent the only one going through things like this. X

Thankyou have just downloaded those two documents. Hopefully we can get a referral soon.
I just want him to not have so much of his young life consumed by this. It's like being on pins waiting for the next one...
