Stubborn nappy rash

I've been to the doctors with my little girl who's 1 years old atleast twice a month these past few months.
She has a severe nappy rash that just won't leave and she's clearly in pain and uncomfortable and I haven't had a straight diagnoses from the dr other than it's a stubborn nappy rash, he keeps describing ointments and nothing is working she's on a steroid one atm. I've stopped using any types of soap on her, i use nappie liners, I don't use baby wipes anymore and I give her a few hours a day without having a nappy on, It got worse and I ended up changing her nappies to more sensitive ones and I change her nappy as soon as she dirtied it. Nothing is helping and it's getting worse and worse I don't know what to do I just want to take the pain away from her and I'm exhausted trying everything I can possibly do.

Has anyone else been in this situation? If so what methods helped? I've tried looking online and the most I've found I have tried and it has failed Sad

I can't stand seeing her being in pain anymore. Her bum is red raw, it's cracks and bleeds and skin coming away and everything it's literally so bad!! I've been referred to a specialist but it's been a week and haven't heard anything back so fingers crossed when I do hear back they will be able to help but for now I just want to try whatever I possible can to make her more comfortable and pain free.

Have you tried metanium (the yellow one)? I found it is the best over the counter product for nappy rash by a mile but you may be dealing with something else like thrush or a bacterial infection. Ask the doc to take a swab.....??

Have you tried canesten? My little girl sometimes suffers from fungal nappy rash, it's the worst!

whatnowz · 10/02/2020 21:44

Thankyou for replying! I've tried metanium and canesten and both didn't work either Sad

I've brought it up to him that I think it's an infection either thrush or something else but he said it's Just a bad nappy rash, now I'm actually thinking to make her another appointment with a different dr for a second opinion because it's been months with the same dr and I'm getting no further forward. I just want to ease her pain a little until then or bring the rash down a bit (could take a couple of days to get an appointment, my practice is constantly booked)

Have you tried this?
www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B000HY6T7M?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

It’s called cavilon spray. Not cheap but bloody brilliant and worth every penny in my opinion. We have been in the same position as you and I just couldn’t shift the rash/broken skin, and my daughter was miserable. You spray this on, leave to dry and it forms a totally waterproof seal over the skin. No wee or poo can break through it; and it gives the skin underneath chance to heal. Within a day or two it was well on the way to being healed. I now use at the first sign of a flare up and it nips it in the bud. It’s actually used as a treatment for bedsores that won’t heal (it was used on my mum when she was in a hospice and it was the first time in weeks she wasn’t in pain from the sores) and the nurse told me it was brilliant and perfectly safe for little ones too.
Good luck, I hope you get it sorted one way or another; it’s crap seeing them in pain isn’t it? X

whatnowz · 15/02/2020 11:29

No I haven't! I will give that a go
Thank-you for sharing it sounds like something that will help as wee and stuff can irritate the bum more!
It is horrible seeing them in pain it's one of the worst feelings and makes you feel helpless Sad I'll order up the spray and give it a go :) x

Trinity ointment is amazing. You will need to google where does it though as you can't buy it in a lot of places, a chemist in Hawick (scotland) sells its and can post it. It's around £12 but it's honestly amazing. Cleared my babies in a day!

sopsmum · 15/02/2020 14:06

Not scaremongering, as it is an incredibly rare disease but potentially under diagnosed, but google lch and see if the rash looks similar. If you are bathing her and not leaving Urine etc you really ought to be referred to a dermatologist. It's not right to leave a small child in pain and nappy rash is painful.

Has the GP swabbed for a staphylococcal infection? DD had this when she was tiny - first GP said it was just nappy rash, we went back as it hadn’t cleared and another GP with more paediatric experience swabbed for staph and it turned out to be that - cleared completely after a couple of courses of antibiotics.

My daughters was the same and turned out to be eczema. Steroid cream helped hers though, but it returned straight away when I stopped using it until I used an emollient for eczema at every happy change and then we also use steroid cream twice a day. I would second the idea that it might be infected and need an antibiotic cream, and also that cavillon is brilliant, had to use it on my sons face, the GP can prescribe that too in cream or spray.

Also some people swear by using raw egg white. Never tried it myself.

One of mine had the most awful nappy rash. Raw and bleeding, needed pain killers. Things that helped:

Daktocort cream: this treats the fungal infection and any secondary bacterial infection.

Fleece nappy liners. These pull all the liquid away from the skin and into the nappy. I made them from an Ikea blanket, and washed them.
Moisturising the skin: huge amounts of Epaderm ointment every hour or so during waking hours.
Washing the skin using Dermol500 daily
Cleaning up after poos with cotton wool and water or baby lotion. Clean ups were very easy as the Epaderm meant nothing stuck
Barrier spray on an bleeding areas: Sorbaderm was the brand we were prescribed, you can buy it I think.

I don’t believe we changed his diet though that might have helped.

I remember he was so sore. He looked like a burns victim and his nappy was frequently bloody. Using that long list of things made a huge difference but he only really was completely clear once out of nappies. Even now his overnight nappy leaves him red and sore if not well moisturised first.

Hartleyhare1206 · 15/02/2020 14:37

@whatnowz hope it helps - let us know how you get on. Meant to say also, I used to clean her with coconut oil and cotton wool at nappy changes (rather than harsh wipes) and once the rash was clear, use Vaseline as a barrier cream (rather than sudocrem and the likes)
Good luck xx
