DS head a bigger percentile

My DS (8 weeks) head whilst it doesn't look abnormally big me and DH did notice it was bigger than what his sisters was. No one has mentioned it doctors/HV etc. However I was looking through his red book and whilst he is on the 50th percentile his head is on the 91st. It's only been the doctor who measured his head and she didn't check his weight. I'm abit of a worrier and Dr google hasn't helped. Going to take him to HV on Wednesday just wondered if anyone has experience of this with their DC? Did the doctor or HV pick it up?

My nephew had a big head when he was a baby. The Dr measured his parents head and turns out they have bigger than average heads too so there was nothing to worry about. Just genetics Smile

Both my kids were monitored for having big heads (and my DS’s was well above the 98th percentile). They’re fine, they just have big heads. It looks less obvious now they’re a bit bigger.

My DS has a huge head. I'm not a medic so can't tell you not to worry so my advice will be to mention it to your HV however I never did. I just thought 'he has a big head'. He did. He wore adult sized riding hats when he was 7. He is now almost 17 and it's never been an issue

userabcname · 08/02/2020 13:06

Same! My ds2 is tracking just below the 50th for weight but his head is the 91st. The GP at his 6 week just said hopefully it means he's clever! I've always had a massive head and am not a massive person so I guess he just gets it from me.

Yesterdayforgotten · 08/02/2020 13:08

Hopefully it means he has a bigger brain and is more intelligent Smile

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 08/02/2020 13:15

DS was the same. He's grown into his head mainly now (he's 7). His dad has a large head too so I blame him Wink

bathorshower · 08/02/2020 13:16

They will only worry if it's above the 99.6th centile. I know that because DD was bang on it. It meant I had to choose clothes with a fastening at the neck, and now means that she can't wear age appropriate hats, helmets, glasses etc., but she's fine and healthy.

FriedasCarLoad · 08/02/2020 13:20

My daughter has consistently been
95th centile head
75th centile height
50th centile weight

I've always had a fairly big head too Grin. By all means check with the Midwife, but IME it's nothing to worry about.

Yesterdayforgotten · 08/02/2020 13:20

I think too small a head may be worrying but always thought slightly larger was healthy.

thecatwiththesilveryfur · 08/02/2020 13:23

We had this, OP: his head moved up through the centiles (75th-91st-98th) and got referred to hospital and all sorts. He's fine 😊 the docs said that if there were a problem, you'd know because he wouldn't be developing normally. Try not to worry (I know that's easier said than done!).

Beautyoftheirdreams · 08/02/2020 13:27

Mine had this, even had a head scan to check all was well which it was. He's been slowly catching up with it though. He saw his consultant yesterday (he was a preemie so still under consultant care) and at 2 and a half his weight was 56th percentile and his head 66th so not much in it anymore

EnidBlyton · 08/02/2020 13:30

have you measured yours and your dh head?

NaviSprite · 08/02/2020 14:11

My DS has always measured much higher on the charts for his head size compared to his height/weight. DD is more proportioned. They’re twins so I did have a period of worrying if either DS’ head was too big or if DD’s was too small.

If it’s concerning you, I’d book an appointment with your GP to discuss, but from what you’ve described your DS is just like mine and he’s perfectly healthy with a robust head Grin

Seasonalanxiety · 08/02/2020 15:00

DS has a massive head. 50th percentile weight and height, head about 99th. Thing is, i have a really big head (can never get non stretchy beats to fit) and my dad had a massive head (had to get a special cap made for school as the biggest size didn't fit him!) so it's just genetic. My head doesn't look freakishly large and neither does DS now he's 10.
In just say it's to fit our massive brains into...

Littleshortcake · 08/02/2020 15:03

Mine had large head circumference and my health nurse told me it was an indicator of height. That said, mention it on Wednesday and hopefully that will put your mind at ease

JoshLinda · 11/02/2020 01:52

My child tracks along the 4th percentile for height (we're all short) but 98th for head circumference! She is super intelligent so must just have to accommodate a big brain!

paradyning · 13/02/2020 19:56

Head size is notoriously difficult to measure and varies hugely between measurers.
If you have any other developmental or clinical concerns then there are some syndromes to worry about such as sotos syndrome. But I wouldn't start worrying yet

LuluJakey1 · 13/02/2020 20:08

My godson had a huge head. So did his sister. His mum called them onion head for about 4 years. It was noticeable u til they were about 8. Not an issue though. Both at uni now- bright, happy, attractive, well-balanced young people.
