Boney growths on both DS feet. Osteopath?

DS age 10 (skinny) has several boney growths (hard lumps) on both feet. Various locations. Not been xrayed or anything. Doc looked and said “not normal but don’t worry, wear good trainers”. He does. He runs a lot. Running club once a week, athletics club once a week and daily mile at school most week days. Obvs all that only term time. Anyone heard of these growths in active children? Thinking of taking him to be assessed by an osteopath. Not sure what they could do. Gait analysis maybe, just need reassurance from someone more experienced in this than my GP.

Podiatrist (foot specific) might be a better choice than osteopath (who tend to be mostly about the back).

Do you they look like calluses?

BoneyGrowthFeet · 01/02/2020 19:07

No they don’t look like callouses. I will try to put a pic on in a bit. They are properly hard boney things. Osteopaths cover the whole body. But yes podiatrist is another option.

You'd need to see an orthopaedic surgeon for their opinion on whether or not he needs surgery. Not sure an osteopath could help.

Clicked too soon - I have one on my left foot. So far it doesn't bother me. I've never had it seen to. However if I had a few I might go and see if they are ok to leave alone or if surgery would be necessary to remove them.

Yes DS is like you Drum. They are not painful and don’t bother him. It’s more me wanting to know more and possibly prevent more developing. GP says they are not something to worry about so not referring to anyone. Wouldn’t want him to have surgery unless absolutely vital. Reason I’m thinking of osteo is that they would look at gait analysis and everything within the body mechanics that have resulted in growths. I’m guessing that the stresses of the running have encouraged growths to strengthen the foot structure.

Where are they? My ds age 6 has some on the back just above his heels. They look quite obvious but Dr said they're normal. My other dc don't have them. He's always worn correctly fitted shoes. They don't hurt.

stripeypillowcase · 01/02/2020 20:27

is it ganglions?
dc has those on top of one foot.
don't bother dc so far and the (private) physio we see regularly for another issue says they shouldn't cause further issues.

BoneyGrowthFeet · 02/02/2020 01:55

Thanks booster, it’s good to hear he’s not the only one. They are on the top, side and outer edge of foot, so different locations on both. Yes he’s always been measured and fitted too.
Stripey, I thought doc would say ganglions as I read they can be really hard but he says ‘prob boney lumps’. Just not very thorough explanation but obviously I expected that from nhs gp. Yes will find someone private for second opinion. Just got to work out who.
