Are we a priorty for council housing?

I have recently separated from my partner of 10 years and have had to move back to my mums with my 5 year old daughter who is severely Autistic. She has difficulties with her expressive and receptive language, has sensory difficulties and attends a specialist school. My mum also has a disability, she has lung problems (not diagnosed yet) Rheumatoid Arthritis, has recently had spinal surgery due to two herniated discs which has left her with nerve damage and is more or less house bound. Recently, my daughter has started to become very aggresssive towards my mum. She hits, kicks, screams, shouts anytime my mum talks. We have tried everything to try and stop this behaviour but my daughter cannot seem to control it. It has been awful and I just feel terrible for my mum AND my daughter. I have applied for a council property and have been placed in band C. Do you think we should be a priority? I'm currently trying to get back into work after being a registered carer for the last 3 years. I'm just at a loss and am worried for my daughters and my mums mental wellbeing.

It will depend on your particular local authority.
Have you had a medical assessment for housing needs at all?

Anxietyqueen1987 · 29/01/2020 09:56

I'm just waiting for them to send me a medical form.

When you are assessed by the medical team you could change banding.
Still keep bidding if you can, you could be lucky.

Ide be prepared for a long wait.
Maybe see if you can get a local mp on side to help.
Try to get your health visitor involved too.

I don't have a health visitor at the moment but I am booking a doctor's appointment, hopefully they can write a supporting letter. I also have a lot of other evidence of my daughters needs, dozens of reports from all kinds of medical professionals and my daughters EHCP.

You'll probably get a higher priority if your mum writes a letter saying that the situation is untenable and that she is no longer able to house you, with a date you have to leave by.
Does your mum or daughter have a social worker / other professional who can write a supportive letter as well, advising that the situation is becoming hazardous for your mum and that the housing situation is not suitable for your daughter?

Thank you, thats really great advice. My mum was going to attend the doctors appointment with me but I also think it will be beneficial for her to write a letter as well. We dont have any social workers but there a number of different proffessionals at my daughters school that I could ask to write a supporting letter.

Its not a question of priority. You need to get medical points, overcrowding points and with a letter from your mother saying you have to leave by......beause its affecting her health you will get points for threatened homelessness. Then you should be able to bid for something more suitable.
Good luck
Some councils give extra points for long term residency - check this too.

If your dm makes you homeless by saying she can't house you any longer, then that will put you up, but in our area that wouldn't rise you up until you'd been moved into emergency accommodation-and you could be there for 6-9 months.

One example I know locally: Family emergency housed with police documented domestic violence with mum in 3 bed house, with already 2 adults living there. They had 5 children, 3 with diagnosed SN...still took 9 months to get a place in our area despite being willing to take anything they were allowed as there were more urgent cases above them.
