Chicken pox vaccine- experiences?

We intend to vaccinate DC against chicken pox. Has anyone done this and what were your experiences? I'm meaning in terms of where you took DC (I'm UK so this will be a private vaccination), how much you paid and were you happy with the service. We're there any side effects? Is there a better time to get it done, e.g. school holidays? Only place I can find that does it locally (although it's not that local) is large city-centre Boots. Would GP be able to advise me where else I could get this done?

DD had hers in superdrug around 2 years ago, it was £65 per vaccine, two needed. If you have a travel vaccine clinic nearly they may also offer it.

It was absolutely fine, the only vaccine DD had that had zero side effects.

DillBaby · 29/01/2020 08:44

We had it done at Boots but lots of local chemists do it if you ask around (they don’t always advertise it). We paid about £250 for two shots and went on a quiet week day. No side effects whatsoever.

Mychitchatdays · 29/01/2020 08:45

I had both my DC vaccinated in Boots it was £140 for two doses. No side effects was happy with the service.

we only went for one vaccination (plenty of natural exposure in school).
no side effects.
private gp
best 100£ ever spent

Thanks @DillBaby I hadn't thought of asking in the chemist.

I've had a couple of vaccines myself in Boots and they varied hugely depending on experience of the person giving it. Only painful injection I've ever had was in Boots when he put the needle in then took and out and put it back in and said 'ooh sorry, it's my first one'!!!! DD is fine with needles so far so I don't want to put her off!

@stripeypillowcase how did you find your private GP please? Is there a website / database?

My dds had the vacerilla (sp?) vaccine in Oz when we lived there. Didn’t stop them from catching chicken pox, but they got it mildly. I heard some kids at their school were covered everywhere all over their bodies, dds had them sporadically all over and got over it quickly.

Go to a travel clinic if you want experienced people to do it. Mine had it as part of the regular childhood vaccination schedule, as we lived in Australia at the time.

No side effects.

Chicken pox has gone through their school several times, I am unworried, they don't catch it and therefore cannot pass it on and devastate someone's pregnancy.

Chicken pox is horrendous. I can't understand why anyone would on purpose infect their child with this disease. I've had shingles. I felt like I was dying. My children won't get that horrendous side effect of chicken pox as they age either.

gin
we jut went to one that my employer uses for medicals.
google will probably give you some options.

Can’t remember the cost but we had it done at our local doctors office ( not in the UK). Very straightforward and no side effects at all. Every time there’s a letter home from school about an outbreak, I’m so happy we did it.
Doctor did advise to wait until spring of that year when all the bugs and viruses had passed. And also to make sure all other vaccines were up to date.
I know chickenpox can be very mild but I’ve seen cases where it has been severe and left permanent scarring, so there was no way I was not going to have it done.

We had DD’s done at Boots, pharmacist was fine, DD cried for about three mins but quickly forgot about it when he gave her a Peppa Pig plaster. No side effects at all

Sandsnake · 29/01/2020 08:57

We got our DS done at three, after he’d been exposed to it three weeks prior to our holiday. We had been seriously considering it anyway, but the risk of him getting it just before our holiday forced the matter! We paid £140 for both jabs in Boots. It was fine, although I think the jab might be a bit of a stingy one as DS cried a bit both times whereas he’d been completely fine for his boosters a few months previously. Definitely pleased I had it done - DS didn’t get CP and hopefully won’t. Doctor friends I know have all opted to get their children the vaccine.

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 29/01/2020 09:01

I had my daughter vaccinated at a local chemist - I think it was about £140 for the two doses. I haven't had chicken pox myself, so I also got vaccinated at the same time. Neither of us had any side effects to speak of - my arm was a bit sore for a couple of hours but DD didn't seem troubled at all.

Spam88 · 29/01/2020 09:15

We had it done in Boots as well. Superdrug was slightly cheaper (but no convenient dates available for us!). Private hospitals will probably do it as well - they were more expensive but were able to offer us same day appointments.

My DD didn't have any side effects, but a potential side effect is that they come out in a mild chicken pox rash, in which case you need to treat them as being contagious as if they had chicken pox. Even if they don't get a rash, you need to keep them away from pregnant women and inmunocompromised people for 6 weeks after each jab.

Heatingson · 29/01/2020 09:22

My youngest had it as I didn’t want her to catch it before a major holiday. We went to a well regarded travel clinic for the first one (they were atrocious and expensive glitterfarts) and our local boots for the second.

eurochick · 29/01/2020 09:41

We used a local travel clinic. The nurse there was great.
