Eczema is so tiring...

My little boy developed eczema at around 4 months. Initially on his torso but soon spread to face, neck, arms - everywhere really. Cheeks and torso are worst affected though.

He's 9 months now and whilst we can keep it under control, we do have to use steroid cream regularly. Our doctor has been great and we have had routine appointments, plus we have a referral to see a consultant in February.

I have tried pretty much every cream available - the only thing that seems to help a little is vaseline, so the poor thing is a greesy mess most the time.

As I said, steroid cream helps, but the moment we stop it starts returning.

We have done all the obvious stuff - detergents, common food allergies, bed sheets, heat, scratch sleeves but no luck.

Just feel like we're fighting a losing battle. Hoping to get some more advice from the consultant, but just finding it tough. Has anyone else been through this and can give me some moral support?

Mine have all had eczema. Ds2 was worst. We were referred to dermatology and used wet wraps. In those days it was tubinet dressings that were used but I believe you get little suits now. We found aveno bath oil and diprobase ointment (not the cream) worked best with fucibet cream for the really bad bits. Fortunately he has pretty much grown out of it (he’s 22). It’s only his hands and an occasional patch he has now but it’s so time consuming and so draining whilst your going through it.

My dc suffered most horrible eczema since baby. We relied on sterids too, for a long time. Moisturizing is the key, so finding a great cream/lotion that works for him and using loads helps a lot.

Is he tested for allergies? My dc has most obscure food allergy as well as many common ones, and environmental allergies.
After being tested and eliminating allergens from diet made a dramatic change.

I felt like fighting a losing battle for a long time too, but it got better with age, though not completely yet. At least we rarely need to use steroid and rely on anti-histamine anymore.

Hope you can find better solution and he stops suffering soon. Good luck.

I feel for your little boy op. My daughter had eczema when she was 15months until she was 11years and we tried everything and nothing worked. But in 2016 I bought aveeno cream the one that says for those who are prone to eczema and also bought sanex for very sensitive skin shower jell in pink writing and started using and it took few months and the eczema was gone for good and never returned.

Yes, been through this and you have to try every cream available in order to find one that doesn't aggravate their skin. Dd could only tolerate Dermol. Everything else made her skin worse.
When you say you tried common food allergies can I ask which ones and how long you/he avoided them? With dd we eliminated dairy for a few weeks and saw no improvement because she was still reacting to all her prescribed creams, and egg in my diet (as she was still breastfeeding). There was some improvement after eliminating egg, but no big change until around 6 weeks of avoiding both. She had a blood test at 6 months that confirmed severe dairy/egg allergy.
