Not sure this is correct place to post and not sure what I really want from this post...advice I suppose. Ds (4) came home from school and asked me why he had no lips i told him he did. He then said a child had asked him why he had no lips. He said he had responded with I do but another child had said you dont there not like everyone elses. I assured him he does have lips but have cried on and off yesterday with the thought of him been bullied and feeling different. Even though he is not. Any way he does have lips albeit very thin ones and his upper lip kinda faces in to his mouth. Sorry not good at explaining have attached pic. Anyway I wasn't concerned until now and we have seen various health professionals over the years for other issues and no one has ever mentioned his mouth and lips. Guess I just want reassurance that they are normal and if not I'll seek medical advice.

I'm sorry, I don't have any very helpful advice but I didn't want your thread to go unanswered. They do look very thin - if you're already regularly seeing a doctor I would bring this up and see what they say?

I'm sure it's just a variation of normal and the various HCPs you see as a child would have mentioned it if it was anything to worry about.

I would just work on building his self esteem so that any comments roll off him - it's a good lesson on 'everyone is different' some have little noses, big teeth etc

Does your DS have a similar mouth to you or to his father, or someone else in the family?

HumphreyCobblers · 19/01/2020 07:43

Well he looks fine but it is horrible when you worry for your children.

One thing, have you checked for an upper lip tie? My ds has this and it pulled his upper lip in a bit. It was layered off because it interfered with breast feeding and I was worried about tooth decay.

One of my kids was born with a very thin upper lip and A pretty smooth area between mouth and nose rather than that indent we all have running from the nose to the mouth. The doctors questioned foetal alcohol syndrome because thin lips are a common feature of that. I was devastated as I’d had a glass of wine or two in pregnancy but nothing I’d thought was risky. Thankfully it wasn’t foetal alcohol syndrome and it was partially resolved by cutting an upper lip tie which also made breastfeeding easier. He looks totally normal now although he will never have big plump lips.

Thanks for your replies you've made me feel much better. I'll ask about an upper lip tie. He was bottle fed when a baby but wasnt a great feeder so that could be a possibility. Did u just raise this with your gp?

Pull his lip back and have a look - unlike a tongue tie an upper lip tie is easily seen. Google image will show you what to look for. A gap between the two front teeth is also a clue
