My dd has CP from when she was born, but only had a definite diagnosis when she was about 12 months old. She's now 18 months old and I didn't realise till a doctor told me I should receive disability benefit.. not sure how i was blind enough to not notice but does anyone know if it can be back tracked at all? Just asking as if it could I'll be able to buy her the 3 equipment she needs with it to help her problems
Thanks for any reply's

Hello, I can't answer your question regarding backdating.
I don't know what her specific problems and equipment needs are, but have you talked to your social services physio/OT department? Is this equipment you think would help or has she been assessed as needing it by a professional. (I know people who have wasted a lot of money buying equipment which turned out to be unsuitable. If they had got professional advice they could have got a) the right equipment and b) some got equipment supplied by the service and could have saved their money). Just thought it was worth mentioning. X

I'm not sure if anything has changed since PIP was introduced
My daughter has CP she is in her 20s now
My health visitor filled in her application for DLA when she was 1 because you couldn't make a claim before the age of 1 when she became entitled to the care part. Could claim for the mobility part when she reached the age of 5. DLA used to be backdated but I'm not sure if PIP is

zoobincan · 16/01/2020 23:35

It’s not the case that you should be getting DLA so much as that you can apply. If you apply and are awarded it will be paid from the date you call and ask for a form, or the day they receive it if you print and send yourself. It is not usually backdated.

orange196T · 17/01/2020 00:18

@Japanesejazz can I ask what cp she has? My dd has hemopoligia , has your daughter managed well with the disability?
@PinkSqidgyPig it's the same equipment she uses at her physio once a week so it was recommend to be bought to have at home but I won't be able to get it funded in any way to me it has to be brought and is about 1,000 for the whole lot of it x

The DLA forms take a lot of effort to fill in and you are best to use help - I recommend the Cereba guide. Your best bet is to phone up and request the form now and that starts the clock ticking. If you print out the form yourself then the start date depend on when you get through the huge form and post it off. Its all based on additional help vs typical for child that age. Also be warned that they can turn you down so don't be afraid to ask for reconsideration if you think that you give more care than typical. Good luck.

yellowallpaper · 17/01/2020 19:04

I believe it's backdated to the time of application not to diagnosis or birth.

OneHanded · 17/01/2020 19:08

Hi it gets back paid from the date you make your claim as it’s about a six month process with an initial call, then a form, the a face to face assessment. Doesn’t matter when the condition started just when you first call to claim.

zoobincan · 17/01/2020 20:42

I have never known a face to face assessment for DLA. I'm not saying it doesn't happen; but it's not the norm.

Mummies ie previous posters your disgusting !! You should not be posting shit like that..
Go away !!

juicey09 · 17/01/2020 20:51

Op, ignore those awful comments above!!! I've reported and hopefully others have too

Soontobe60 · 17/01/2020 20:51

@NigerianMommy
@MummyBear6969

Both your posts have been reported. Such ignorant, inflammatory, goady comments have no place on MN, or indeed anywhere.
FYI, CP is caused as a result of trauma usually during birth so has fuck all to do with vaccinations.

Soontobe60 · 17/01/2020 20:56

@orange196T
You will need a professional report to support your claim, this can be from the GP, Health Visitor or consultant. You might want to ask them about providing one now whilst you're waiting for the forms to arrive. Have you also been in touch with the Learning Disabilities team? You'll need to start thinking about applying for an EHCP to support her when she starts nursery in the future. Look on the Local Offer website for your Local Authority, you should find details there.
I'm sure I feel you post on the SEN forum you'll get lots more help and advice.

Japanesejazz · 17/01/2020 23:15

My daughter has right side hemiplegia
She was a premature baby so some pathways were established down the left side
She had physio and OT every week until she was 5 which helped a lot

paradyning · 19/01/2020 19:57

Definitely call for the forms. Do t print from the internet as that way they backdate to the date of the phonecall.
There are charities out there too that can help with equipment. Newlife is one they don't meanstest. Also try familyfund, freedomforkids and caudwell children.

paradyning · 19/01/2020 19:58

*don'r print from internet

paradyning · 19/01/2020 20:00

Depending on their health needs OP you may also be able to claim hours for carers from your local health authority/council. Newlife charity can also advise you on this.

orange196T · 20/01/2020 20:59

Sorry what we're the comments? Blaming vaccinations? I didn't see!
Sorry but my daughter was BORN WITH IT. You don't get CP from vaccinations it's through a stroke.
Educate yourself before commenting.
And I have printed the form off! Will it make a difference then to me ringing and asking to send the form? @paradyning thank you for that helpful information. Really appreciate that!
And does that mean getting a carer in to look after her?!

OP posts:
Soontobe60 · 20/01/2020 21:01

Phone them for the form in the morning. Use the one they send you. Use the printed one as a practice.

orange196T · 20/01/2020 21:04

@Soontobe60
Okay I take it there are issues with using printed ones?! Luckily I haven't sent off yet :)

OP posts:
Knittedfairies · 20/01/2020 21:11

If your daughter is awarded DLA, you may be able to claim Carer's Allowance if you meet the criteria. Remember to keep a copy of your completed DLA form; I found it helpful when the next claim came round.

EggysMom · 20/01/2020 21:13

Okay I take it there are issues with using printed ones?!

Not really issues as such - if you've completed it and it's ready to post, then you can send it. Any DLA award will be calculated from the date your form is received.

What is being suggested is that - if you haven't completed the self-printed form - you phone and ask them to post the blankform. It gets stamped with the date of your call, and any award will be calculated from the date of the phone call, rather than the date they receive the form. Which if it takes you two weeks to complete, is an additional two weeks of money.
