DS 5 has concussion, need some reassurance!

My DS fell over at school hitting his head yesterday afternoon. Teacher told me he cried but was alright afterwards, however as the afternoon went on he started complaining of headache and when I arrived to pick him up he was in a state, crying, saying the light hurt, started falling asleep on me as I was talking to his teacher, soon after started vomiting. So of course we took him straight to hospital, where they diagnosed him with concussion.

He had an xray/scan which showed no serious injury thankfully, and actually began to perk up quite quickly, but was kept in overnight for observation. He slept ok and the doctor gave us the all clear to go home in the morning, but that DS needs to stay off school for the rest of the week and rest.

The problem is, DS has suspected ADHD so calm and rest is not something he does very easily! He's thankfully asleep now, but has been tearing about the house as usual since we got home and I'm terrified he's going to do himself further injury. I've tried doing some calm activities with him and explaining why he needs to be calm and rest so his head can get better, he just told me "don't worry mummy, it only hurts when shake my head fast like this...!"Confused

Am worrying too much about this as he seems his usual self? Anyone with experience of DC having concussion?

I had concussion once and felt sick for a couple of days.

Obviously if he feels worse or is vomity/dizzy etc then get off to A&E.

I think keeping them home is a bit about being able to keep them under closer supervision (in case symptoms return) and preventing a repeat bump (so staying off playgrounds / bikes / sport). I’d probably try to keep him active but calm / steady so maybe walking to the shops, bit of tidying in the garden, washing the car. No direct experience except that I had to keep DS home following surgery to reattach a finger and this is what we did as we were told to avoid bumping the finger at all for a month!

DS had this couple of years ago. Happened Thursday - came home Friday and back to school Monday. A week seems a bit extreme? Maybe nip to see GP and ask for advice?

Luckily he doesn't feel sick anymore, a lot of the symptoms cleared up quite quickly, the hospital staff were amazed at the transformation he made from when he was brought in very pale and barely responsive, to the chatterbox he normally is.

@bonzo77 that sounds like a nightmare! A few walks sound like a good idea. It's just that when we're at home DS won't walk from room to room, he'll always run (luckily we're in a flat with no stairs) and he just has these mad moments from time to time, a bit like when cats suddenly go bananas and start racing around and rolling about the place like nutters for no reason...
