Help - advice needed!

Hi,

My DS is 6 weeks old and has come down with a nasty cold and cough. We've been to the GP who confirmed that it was a virus and that they weren't worried but I can't help being stressed, I feel so sad that he's poorly at such a young age :(

Can anyone suggest any magic remedies to relieve DS's symptoms? He particularly struggles with the cough which gets worse in the evenings, and when he cries. He seems to be feeding ok, although he has to stop when he starts coughing.

Any help greatly appreciated!

You could try bringing him into the bathroom with the shower or bath turned on to steam up the room, it could help to clear him out a bit

Prop his mattress up a little bit and you can also use a saline spray to help with the nose congestion. My little one hated it but it always let her manage a couple of hours sleep. X

It’s awful when they ate tiny and poorly. Are you feeding him OP? If so there will be lots of antibodies going to him to make him feel better soon.

It's so sad, I can't believe how upset I am over a cold!! I'm EBF so hoping that the antibodies kick in soon. Will try the bathroom idea before bedtime, he's not too bad when he's asleep weirdly but when he's awake he's really not happy.

Thanks for all your replies!

X

He's also sleeping a lot more than usual which I've read is normal when they're poorly but again, makes me worry!

I've always used a warm mist humidifier for my kids.
I used to use breastmilk instead of saline in a nose dropper for the kids. But of course, try a bit of saline in a nose dropper/saline spray if you prefer.

It's such a worry. My older two didn't get colds until much later. But DC3 came down with one within days of coming home from the hospital (and he's a summer baby). It was so worrying. I feel for you. Flowers
Are your little one's hands and feet warm? Try mittens and socks to keep him cozy, just the little mittens they wear so as not to scratch themselves will do. I know they tend to fall off, but give it a little try.

Just for reassurance, I'd have the GP look at him. It's always a good idea.

Hi, sounds like you are doing all the right things. Just keep an eye on his breathing over the next few days, especially if he vomits after feeding (if he's having to work harder you'll see the base of his throat and under his ribs 'sucking in') and if there's any sign of problems, call a doctor. Don't mean to alarm you but it's the time of year when RSV goes around and tiny babies are very good at catching it. My LO had it when she was three weeks old-she was fine but it was unpleasant at the time.

My DS had a terrible cough at 6 weeks, i found raising the moses basket so he wasnt laying flat helped, i also put a tiny amount of olbas oil on a muslin cloth and tied it to the handles on the moses basket, also in his pram. I am EBF too. Just keep him upright as much as you can. We were advised not to do steam by the GP but i cant remember why.
Its horrible, DS is 6months and has had three bad coughs now ( the joy of having older sibling in school) lucky always viral and no infections!
It will be bothering/upsetting you more than him x
