7 year old, eye pain and vomitting

Morning,

My 7 year old started complaining of eye pain yesterday about 5:30. She was really distracted by it and felt nauseous too with diarrreah. I spoke to 111 Who sent me to the gp which was luckily still open till 7.

He wasn’t too concerned, said her tonsils were enlarged so she’s under the weather, possibly has eye strain because she’s tired. No temp or anything.

She woke at 5 bring saying the eye was much worse and has been sick twice. I can’t work out if the symptoms are related. The nausea and sickness now are worse than the eye pain.

I’m panicking a bit about tumours, can anyone just talk me down. I know it wouldn’t come on that quickly really. It’s probably a virus etc.,.. has anyone else seen the same thing?

Unless I'm mistaken they've already been seen by the OOH GP.

Sounds like migraine. We were aware of my ds' migraines starting around the age of 7 or 8, but neuro said that in retrospect he had had them since birth (given the symptoms we described). Ds also has cyclical vomiting which isn't in and of itself life threatening, but the dehydration from all the vomiting was dangerous and difficult to manage without a drip. As the medical professionals have said...get your ds checked out by a doctor/a&e. We were several years into ds' migraines before I felt comfortable diagnosing them myself and not taking him in to see a medical professional in person. Ds once had symptoms that included going blind for 3 days and a high fever and going totally listless and floppy and which everyone thought was spinal meningitis, but which "luckily" turned out to be a migraine (so thankful for the amazing neuro who recognized it before ds was given a spinal tap.)
PS. My rule of thumb to assess if ds had a tummy bug or an episode of CVS was whether he had diarrhea to go with the vomiting (diarrhea = tummy bug).

Pps. Ds went on to get abdominal migraines which again, he had been apparently having since he was a baby, but I only started to recognize after we learned about the head migraines, because he did a telling eye squint with his left eye when he was beginning a migraine.

Hi all, thanks for being so kind. Second ooh dr is happy nothing sinister is behind this. Could be a virus, could be a migraine. In context of the illness starting at night and all neuro obs checking out she wasn’t concerned though.

Dd was sick 7 times in total, including whilst at the hospital so have bought her diaralyte and cherry coke and she has perked up.

Feels migrainey to me. I get them myself and recognise the relief when it stops and the need to eat and sleep which is where she is now.

Thanks so much for the support. I really was panicking and trying to keep a cool head knowing it could have been a myriad of things. X

I wouldn’t go to A&E thank god some people have some rationality. She definitely should be seen but A&E is not the place

Pobpen · 04/01/2020 10:10

Glad she’s perked up a bit OP! Well done for staying calm and logical as well. Too many people are so quick to make the jump to A&E for things that aren’t accidents or emergencies..then wonder why the service has huge waiting times and is overstretched

My nan just two weeks ago had a bad fall, had hyperthermia and pneumonia etc. A&e were amazing but it was so busy. It was at the forefront of my mind that I just didn’t want to add to that if I didn’t need to. The steps are in place for us, 111, dr etc. I was in good hands at every step and not once was a&e mentioned.
