blocked salivary gland or mumps in an 11 yr old

My 11 yr has had a cold for a few days nothing major at all and has felt fine. Last night he said he had toothache and then 2 hours later a sore throat. At 2am he started screaming in pain saying his throat was so sore and he has never had a sore throat like it. When I turned the light on I noticed quite a big swelling on his right side of the neck and jaw, felt a bit like a swollen gland but more prominent nothing on the other side and a normal temperature. Gave him calpol and he slept till 6am woke in pain again. Been to the doctor and it could be mumps but unlikely as had the MMR vaccine and he feels well so he has diagnosed a blocked salivary gland and given him a course of antibiotics. If the other side swells or he gets a fever it may be mumps. No experience of either so just wondering if anyone knows much about a blocked salivary gland or mumps. He is in alot of pain but doesn't seem ill. The pain definitely subsides when dosed up with calopl and ibuprofen.

Can you post a picture of the swelling ? Anonymise his facial features.
Is the swelling definitely parotid region /pre-auricular region? You mention toothache, so it's important to rule out a swelling of dental origin.

I had this as an adult. The lump would come up and then slowly go down again. I could actually feel the stone in the base of my mouth. Had to have it cut out.

DH had mumps as an adult, and it was totally a no brainer to diagnose the first day - the swelling is in front of the ears, not in the neck. He looked like a very grumpy hamster

My daughter had a blocked salivary gland at the same age - one side of her jawline was very swollen, and it came up quite quickly after her complaining of a sore jaw - she couldn't open her mouth fully or eat without pain. She was given antibiotics, but was also told to suck on sour sweets - which she was extremely happy about!
