DS8 vomiting for 5 days. 3rd Dr visit

Am posting for some ideas about what could possibly be making DS8 so unwell. Seeing the Dr again later and need some ideas to run past Dr if any danger of being fobbed off.

DS has learning difficulties so can't tell me where it hurts etc. Drs are usually pretty good at considering his LDs when assessing him so I'm not saying they won't be looking to help.

DS has had standard low level cough/cold for a few weeks, off his food Christmas Day and totally shattered when woke on Boxing Day. Started vomiting mid morning and didn't stop so took him to out of hours and he was admitted for overnight observation and to ensure didn't get dehydrated.

Seemed to be picking up and tolerating sips of water via syringe so came home mid afternoon Friday. He was given a coverall antibiotic but threw that up each time given and the course was only three days.

Since then he has barely touched food bar the odd mouthful of yogurt and one mouthful of produce this morning. He's only taking water when desperate or we syringe in. Seems to brighten a bit with calpol and then looks for food but often coughing / gagging as soon as he has anything. He's vomited a few times overnight each night.

He just had half a yoghurt and a good gulp of water but coughed and all come straight back again.

He's skinny anyhow but you can see the weight loss of 5 days of no food.

Took him back to out of hours on Saturday but Dr thought virus and recovering but I'm just not convinced.

My current suspicion is some kind of throat infection so going to ask for antiobiotic to target throat but what else could it be?

Any other similar viruses out there? It's day 5 and he's still sleeping all the time, although able to go on iPad when awake. Walking is very unsteady now too (although clumsy at best of times).

Not asking Mumsnet to diagnose but just please throw out some suggestions that I can run through with dr.

Thanks in advance.

Tonsillitis can cause vomiting and make you feel very unwell so that is my gut feeling but obviously I can’t diagnose online.

If he's gagging on swallowing, suspect difflam throat spray worth considering.

My youngest had a sickness bug for 7 days straight early Dec and in the end we just got him so pro-biotics from a health food shop and some live yogurt.. he stopped vomiting in day 7/8 but has only just started eating whole meals and lost a fair bit of weight - some sickness bugs such as true Norovirus are really tough on little ones and can go on for a long time and present with flu like symptoms too x

If he vomited within 20 mins if each dose then he definitely did not receive this course of antibiotics. Chest infection can cause vomiting. Ask for bloods to be done, test urine and stool too

Family of 9 here, 4 of ours had the same viral cough / fever that led to them all vomiting repeatedly overnight. Lasted for 7-8 days for each of them.

Never washed so many bedclothes in my life...

Thanks for replying everyone, Dr reassured me that she's seen lots of this and the extended sickness isn't anything to worry about. Only an issue if stopping passing urine.

Sorry for those of you who've had this too and have also spent a week washing. I'm going to have to get the sofa professionally cleaned once he's well Shock

Does he like icelollies? Much better than sips of fluid and good for rehydration. Soothing if throat is sore.

DD had the norovirus for 11 days. She lost a lot of weight and was shattered. In the end she had a stool culture but it was ‘just’ the norovirus. The rest of us got over it in 24 hours so I have no idea why it hit her so bad.

cobwebsoncornices · 31/12/2019 08:30

I was also going to suggest ice lollies. Soothing, hydrating and the sugar tends to give mine a boost too which can then get them interested in other things.
Does he have a restricted diet? I'm not sure yogurt (or other dairy) is the best thing immediately after vomiting or if someone has a throat issue. Will he eat banana (mashed up?), rice or egg? Or just plain toast - but that might be scratchy if he has a bad throat.
Poor him - and you. It's tough when anyone is ill but much more so when they can't explain what is wrong.

Was coming on to say what PP said- don’t give him yogurt/porridge. Dairy is not great for upset stomachs.
