Fever of 39.8 and cold hands and feet

Hi everyone,
My two year old has had a cold for about 5 days now, he seemed better yesterday but today had a fever of 39.8 which came down with nurofen. He also has cold hands and feet.
Eating snacks of toast and banana fine and drinking lots.
He gets viral induced asthma so I do worry a lot about him. He has been in hospital a fair few times with it.
Hes sleeping now but should I try and get an OOH doctors appointment?
Thanks

I would go with your gut instinct, if you feel there's something not quite right, phone 101, or make an appointment. There's no harm in getting him checked out just in case.
Cold hands and feet can be normal with a fever, however can sometimes be cause for concern.
It's good that he is eating and drinking, I presume he's keeping them down?
It's also good that his temperature has come down - is it staying down or rising back up?

As a paediatrician, my advice would be to follow your instinct. It would be dangerous and unprofessional of me to tell you what to do based on your description alone as there are many more questions I would ask and assessments I would do on a child in front of me.

Mother's instinct is one thing I always trust and even if I am looking at a friend's child and I can't see any warning signs, my advice to them would still be to take them GP/hospital immediately if they feel that something still isn't right

Also, just to add, that GPs should prioritise a child that age to be seen. If in doubt, call 111 or get the appointment as they have the trigger lists

It's never a bad idea to get a little one checked over when you're worried. Far better to get him looked at and be told that he's fine than miss something scary because you didn't want to bother anyone.

It's awful when your dc are poorly. Hope he's on the mend soon.

I've just checked on him whilst he's sleeping and his little feet have warmed up.
I'll check his temp again when he wakes and go from there.
No coughing either so inhaler doing its job.
I feel sad for him that it's never just a simple cold, it's always breathing issues too, though he is getting better with the asthma.
Thankyou everyone ❤

I took DS to the doctor in the end and he said it sounds like he has picked up a few viruses and has a slight croupy cough for which he prescribed steroids.
Today he still has high temps, highest being 40.9 and has completely stopped eating. Drinking but not a lot. Lethargic.
I will book another doctors appt tomorrow so not sure why I'm posting, just worried Sad

Do ring your emergency gp number if you are worried or nhs direct. I've done this lots of times for my dd who gets poorly a lot. Last time the gp rang me several times in the night to check progress.
Not weeing is a sign they will ask about so check nappies/ potty.

Bananarama12 · 01/01/2020 19:28

Thankyou, yes I will check on him through the night and call if I need to. He has had wet nappies today so that's good.
The mum guilt of making the right and wrong decisions is real this week. We have all been poorly since christmas and I just want my happy boy back!

How is he doing now? I really empathise with you as I have a ds who suffered viral-induced asthma from a you g age. I remember many a late night hospital dash because symptoms always get worse at night. It does often get better they bigger and stronger they get, but that's not much help to you now. I know the worry. Counting the breaths per minute, looking for skin sucking in under ribs and other sign of breathing difficulty. Such long nights. I hope he's improving.
