Are teething poos a thing?

SerafinaPekkala1 · 22/12/2019 14:43

My little boy is teething very badly at the mo, all 4 front top teeth are coming through in one go and it's making him miserable. Gnawing on everything and very irritable.

He's had the most foul smelling, explosive nappies the last few days (full outfit change needed every time) and horrific smelling farts, and although the NHS says teething nappies aren't a thing, anecdotally lots of people say they are.

He's not been sick, no temperature, slightly off his food but he always is when teething. Just wondering if I need to keep him away from family members over Christmas if it's defo a bug, or could it be teething?

Thanks!

I would say yes they are. (Not a hcp) both of my DC had runny acidic (sp) nappies when teething and always got terrible nappy rash no matter how quickly I changed them or how much sudicrem etc

Sharonthetotallyinsane · 22/12/2019 14:49

All mine had/have rancid poos when they teeth and so seemingly do a lot of other people's babies (anecdotally).

PotteringAlong · 22/12/2019 14:53

I would say they were a thing too

greatballsofyarn · 22/12/2019 14:55

Yes, teething poos are a thing. I believe it's to do with the extra saliva they produce and swallow.

Expressedways · 22/12/2019 14:56

Yes it’s a thing because they swallow a lot more saliva than normal as a result of the teething which can cause a stomach upset.
(This from DD’s paediatrician)

georgialondon · 22/12/2019 14:57

Yep

BillywigSting · 22/12/2019 14:58

They are absolutely a thing and they are like no other poos on this earth.

I also got them when my wisdom teeth erupted. They're dreadful.

Rainallnight · 22/12/2019 14:58

Yep, definitely a thing here too! Mine were/are also much more prone to nappy rash when having teething poos, so take precautions on that front!

Poor them, it’s so hard. Fingers crossed it’s over soon!

SerafinaPekkala1 · 22/12/2019 15:46

Ok good to know thank you! They seem set on the fact that there's no link but most mums seem to think otherwise. I'm sure it's not a bug but by god they are the worst poos I've ever come across, the whole house stinks 😷

Yep, give them red bums.

newbingepisodes · 22/12/2019 21:26

Our teething Poos smell like vinegar and cause red bum.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 22/12/2019 21:27

I remember runny poos and sore bums when my babies were teething

DrPimplePopper · 22/12/2019 21:27

Yeah watery and smelled of vinegar, it's really common. Get some yellow metanium cream if you haven't already!

DramaAlpaca · 22/12/2019 21:29

In my experience, health care professionals always say no it's not a thing, but every other parent I've ever discussed this with agrees with me that it is.

ShowOfHands · 22/12/2019 21:30

Absolutely a thing. They were like battery acid and noxious smelling. Left the dc with a horrible, shiny, red, cracked rash despite metanium/nappy free time.

megletthesecond · 22/12/2019 21:30

Oh yes. I knew when mine were teething because their poo was horrible. Even their nursery could spot a teething poo during a nappy change.
I assume it's the excess saliva or a hormonal thing.

JingleBelle27 · 22/12/2019 21:32

So glad I found this thread!

My DS is teething and his poos have been horrific! I was worried but this has put me at ease Grin

Sounds like we are in the same boat OP. Time to add a peg for the nose to the changing bag!

thenightfury · 22/12/2019 21:32

I only really know when DS is cutting a tooth from his rancid nappies.

wishingyouluck · 22/12/2019 21:39

Definitely!! Very vinegary smelling and soft! Yuck.

Minxmumma · 23/12/2019 21:47

Oh heck yes! The nappies of doom!
It's something to do with all the extra mucus they are swallowing (as if the gallons running down their face aren't enough!).

Quite often creates nasty nappy rash as well, even if you are quick off the mark to change them.

alwaysdressedinyellow · 23/12/2019 21:51

Oh god yes! Yellow vinegary smelling poos - it was grim!

SummerPavillion · 23/12/2019 21:53

Yes, the only time I was actually grossed out by their nappies.

Make sure you use lots of that nappy cream, the name escapes me... used it daily for years! The usual one. I must've repressed the memories of those early years Grin

theseriousmoonlight · 23/12/2019 21:56

Absolutely a thing. My dd never had nappy rash apart from when she was teething. Metanium was the best thing along with as much nappy free time as possible.

ReturnofSaturn · 23/12/2019 22:02

Yes!

AnnaBegins · 23/12/2019 22:28

My GP says they're a thing! Even though officially the NHS says they're not, she just snorted and told me not to worry about the luminous green nappies!
