Omeprazole for reflux

SurreyisSunny · 21/12/2019 11:13

My 9 week old DS was prescribed Omeprazole this week for his reflux by consultant paediatrician. He’s tried gaviscon and ranatadine is not available

I’m having a nightmare getting the tablets to dissolve and feel he’s only getting half the dose. I’ve tried leaving to dissolve for 30 mins and stirring a lot. Any tips? I bought a dummy dispenser and used this today. Worked much better than a syringe.

Desperate for this to help. He gets so uncomfortable

Buy a tablet crusher and mix with water then. We do this twice a day for our dc

I didn't think you could crush omeprazole.

We used to swirl it whilst dissolving it.

It did really help here. It didn't stop his reflux completely but definitely eased the symptoms and also took away a lot of the pain.

As I said. We crush it and administer twice a day. Have done for many years.
So you can crush it if necessary.
You mix with x amount of water and give y dose depending on your prescription.

And as I said, tablets should not be crushed. You may chose too. But OP please check yourself and ask your pharmacist if you are unsure.

Don't take my word for it or others who may give incorrect information.

OP, i dont think the dissolvable tablets are meant to dissolve completely. I.e. getting a clear looking solution. I think it's normal for them to be a bit 'gritty' and have the little bubbles.

Oh random. I wish you had a or peg fed child. Then you too would be all knowing.

paradyning · 23/12/2019 16:50

*had a PEG fed child

But yes OP. ask your pharmacy as it depends on the particular brand you have.

SurreyisSunny · 23/12/2019 20:37

The brand I have do not dissolve and can’t be crushed as made up of tiny beads. It’s far from an infant friendly.

I found some guidance eventually on an Australian website. He still hates it just hoping it helps.

You can get it in liquid form. Speak to your dr

You can get it in liquid form but it's not often prescribed as it's made to order and more expensive. However you definitely need it so ask your gp. In the meantime, pop into your pharmacy and ask for the largest medicine syringe. Pull the plunger out and put the tablet in then suck up water til it's full. If you want it to dissolve easier then suck a little hot water from kettle, say a quarter of the full syringe amount. Then keep shaking. It will dissolve and you can then give to baby same way as calpol etc. This is what I do for my ds. If baby does not like the taste you can use some fruit juice instead of water, but still add a little kettle water to help it dissolve.

paradyning · 23/12/2019 21:18

Oh yes the tiny beads you can't crush. Liquid Omeprazole is like gold dust as it's about £150 a bottle so they don't like giving it!! But definitely make a case for it.
Good idea about the syringe pp.

Dmt80 · 23/12/2019 21:37

I would go back to the gp and ask for Losec Mups - it's the dissolvable version of omeprazole which you can put in a syringe with slightly cooled boiled water and shake until it dissolves as pp suggested. Aim the syringe at the back corner of the mouth and squirt little bits in at a time followed by putting a dummy in so they don't spit it out.
