My Dd has been unwell on and off for 7 weeks now. She began nursery in August and as expected picked up colds and mild infections etc but since 7 weeks ago she has had hand foot and mouth, slapped cheek, croup, ear infection, chest infection, flu and general colds, eye infections, mastoiditis and is now fighting what the doctors are just saying is a general viral stomach bug which she has had for 2.5 days now.

I took her to hospital yesterday who said to give her another few days and as long as she is keeping a little water down she is ok. She is being sick after everything she eats and drinks. She currently has had a nappy on since 6pm last night, now 8am and it is still dry. She has took very little water and had sickness and slight diarrhoea last night before bed. She’s not herself at all and I am worried sick. Yesterday she was lifeless (completely the opposite of her usual even when unwell). She just slept or lay in my arms and I explained everything to the doctors. I don’t know what to do anymore.

Try and buy some dioralyte satchets from the chemist for her today, it hydrates more than plain water does. Give her a small sip every 10 mins no gulping it down. If she can't even keep that down and does not do a wee wee this morning then I'm afraid it will be another trip to A&E for you to tell them she needs fluids.

In regards to constant illness, it's totally normal the first winter of them being in a childcare setting, my ds was the same, it's really draining and they just get so run down but it's building up her immune system for the future. The only thing I can recommend to help keep their immune system up during bouts of illness is plenty of regular consistent sleep, a vitamin and as much healthy food as you can get into them (I know with some kids that's hard so you have to get creative with smoothies, fruit juices etc)

Take her back. Trust your instincts. Don't worry about being told you're over anxious. If you're concerned that this is serious and not just a run of the mill sickness bug or that she's properly dehydrated, take her back.

In the meantime try and get fluids in her. Jelly is fluid. Ice lols are fluids. Dioralyte is a good call.

Hope she's better soon

Thank you!

She has definitely picked up in past couple of days. Not as lifeless and pottering around but not completely herself and is still being sick after eating/drinking.

I had asked at hospital when I should become concerned and they said if she’s not better by what will be tomorrow but I’m unsure what to do as she’s slightly better but surely shouldn’t still be vomiting this long? DS took the bug yesterday badly and is over it in less than 24 hours. DD is nearing day 5.
