8 year old vomiting for 48h now

Vomiting bug working its way through the DCs. one has had it, couple of vomits and done. But other 8yo has been sick for 48 hours now. He is mostly vomiting bile and water but is also still weeing a relatively normal amount and colour and had a lovely day playing on the beach and demanding the same food as the others (which I refused).

Of course we are away in a foreign country so not sure what to do. He isn't dehydrated or he wouldn't be weeing right? He seems to be charging around playing with cousins, vomiting up water and electrolyte solutions, and then playing again.

Tonight he's vomited 3 times, last night 4 times, a couple of times in the day too, I've had no sleep at all, DH is still at home in the UK and is asleep, my relatives here are a bit catastrophic so don't want to freak them out. I'm going mad hand washing and dettol wiping.

Given that he is still weeing should I give him a bit more time to get over this himself? Or take him to the doctor here, which realistically is probably going to mean A&E?

Well in the last hour he has been sick twice more (so 5 times in 7 hours) and is now feeling really floppy and listless. So heading to the hospital now.

How is he OP?
I can always tell when I'm dehydrated= reduced urine output, dark smelly urine. Do you have any access to dips ticks?

PatricksRum · 21/12/2019 03:37

Oh sorry just saw you're heading to hospital. Hope he's OK op

Xiaoxiong · 21/12/2019 04:19

He had a wee in the night, but is now complaining of dry mouth and is really flopping around and miserable and just wants to sleep. But given we were up all night together in the loo I just want to sleep too!!

Anyway just waiting for a cab and then we'll be off - they could just give us dioralyte sachets but they might put him on a drip. I still feel somewhat over the top going to hospital considering he spent all yesterday charging around the beach and yelling for ham sandwiches but I guess better safe than sorry Xmas Sad

Poor ds :(
I'll be up for a while if you want to talk anyway.
And I'm used to vomiting so I might have tips if you need them Grin
Which country are you in? Somewhere with reasonable Healthcare? Has he kept anything down?

Xiaoxiong · 21/12/2019 04:48

We're in Kenya on the coast. I shouldn't have been seduced into taking the kids to soft play last week in Nairobi, I'm sure that's where they caught it, it's going round here.

He has now held down a few sips of sparkling water for an hour but he is really like a zombie 😕

Luckily the health care here is excellent, and very cheap. I just don't want to put him through having a drip if I don't have to...

Oh that's good to know the Healthcare is good.
Are you at the hospital yet?
Could he have a few bites of a biscuit for some sugar?
Hopefully they could give him some oral anti emetics and he can begin to eat/ drink and avoid the drip

Xiaoxiong · 21/12/2019 07:55

At the hospital, no wait, straight to triage, they have taken blood to make sure nothing more sinister going on (results back in 30 mins), given him a bag of IV saline and an anti-nausea drug through the line as well. He's perked up massively and demanding fried squid.

Total cost: £22!!

Good thing I came in and they did a blood test - they found a bacterial infection so added an IV antibiotic to the line in his hand.

Thanks for the handhold this morning Patrick - I really appreciate it!!

Fried squid Grin
gosh he really was suffering, bacterial infection. :(
Thank goodness you took him in, mother's instincts!
Is he going to stay in overnight for the IV antibiotics or can he take them orally?
He'll be feeling much better in no time!

Winterwonderland10 · 21/12/2019 09:13

Hope he's feeling better soon. Our instinct always knows

PatricksRum · 21/12/2019 19:52

How is he? @Xiaoxiong

Xiaoxiong · 22/12/2019 08:34

All better Patrick, thanks for asking!! He had the IV out this morning, still on the antibiotics for a while to finish the course. He is very stroppy for lack of food so I know he's absolutely fine now. What a transformation once he had those fluids and the IV antibiotics, truly magical!
