One and a half year old in a cast

So our 1.5yo is in a cast (above the knee) after a fall recently and one of the mundane but crucial things I didn't contemplate when waiting in A&E was the challenge of keeping it clean when confronted with this inevitable 'nappy explosions' that take every parent by surprise.

Any special tips from people out there in similar situations on how to ensure that our little mite's cast is protected in the event of errant poo seeping out of nappy.
(Common sense things are covered: yes, the nappy is the right size, yes, we take great care in changing and remain vigilant)

Hi. My DS was in a hip spica plaster for 10 months, so I know how difficult this is! I used to double nappy him - so a smaller nappy under the cast, a bigger one over. But it's really difficult to avoid accidents. I changed him much more often & was just really vigilant at getting to poo ones really quickly.

With an above the knee one, I wonder if you could find something to put into the top of the cast & sort of fold over it.

Get a wrap for a reusable nappy and use it over your nappy. I liked the motherease rikki ones.

Honestly I don’t remember what we did when DS1 was in cast, but I’ve just thought that a reusable nappy over the top of a disposable would probably let work.
We use reusables with DS2 and never have poo leaks. And using one over the top of a disposable is a fairly well know poonami defence mechanism.
I do remember having a significant poo leak with DS1 and we had to have the cast replaced.

You can get plastic sleeves that go over casts for protection from splashes - one of those might be worth a look. They have a neoprene collar that fits fairly snugly round the limb so should stop the worst getting to the cast. You wouldn’t want it on all the time but could be useful for journeys and outings and other times you couldn’t get to the nappy quickly?

this is the brand we used for my 4 year old’s arm cast recently but there’s lots of other brands, worth hunting for the smallest size!

I would look into reusable nappies. We haven't had a single poo leak in DS's entire year of life.

Cover the top of cast with elastoplast & change it regularly. I was in a spica cast as a baby & that is what my mum used to do.

QueenOfOversharing · 19/12/2019 10:09

@Nat6999 you've just reminded me that hospital used to do this too! It's weird, I'm thinking back to those (21) years ago.

Nat6999 · 19/12/2019 11:11

I was in pot for nearly a year from age 1, my mum got very good at adapting nappies & cleaning the pots up

Thank you ! You're all brilliant and I'm fighting to hold off a wee bit of weeping. Those suggestions are exactly what I was hoping for... Been an upsetting episode overall. Little guy is really being resilient and is an absolute trooper but I hate to see his running around suddenly curtailed

You will find it far harder than him. They are resillient little sods.

QueenOfOversharing · 20/12/2019 09:15

It's definitely harder for us!
