How soon did you get sick after exposure?

Hi everyone. The last two days I've had a good old rant on here about my selfish friend sending her child back to school 36 hours after starting with a stomach bug and way less than 24 since the last squirts.

She went back yesterday. I forced a smile at her and said hope she's better etc.

Got a text this morning from friend (who told the school her child had overeaten) to say she has been puking all night and squits and feels terrible!!!

I kept my child of today and plan the same tomorrow. My toddler is Ill too and I don't want it here. My child played with the contagious kid yesterday as I expected! It's been 24-28 hours so far. Would you say by tomorrow afternoon she will begin with it if she has caught it? I know there's no guarantees but I'm hoping if she is ok tomorrow afternoon we can say we dodged it

Everything I've seen/read/heard says anything from two days up to a week depending on the bug and how you respond to it. I'm currently waiting to see if the rest of my family will start being ill after our youngest has had a tummy bug. Don't think I'll feel safe until it's been a week!

With all kindness intended I think you need to stop stressing about this. As pp said it Could be up to a week or so. She may well have escaped so fingers crossed. You are creating so much anxiety for yourself. Go to the shop stock up on bleach as its the only thing that will kill noro. Get some plastic gloves for clean incase she is sick and if she is make her use a different towel etc and if you have more than one toilet get everyone else to use the opposite to her. She could catch it from any kid in her class or you catch it from someone you work with/sat next to on the bus etc who hasn't washed their hands or come back to school /work early.

Here's the facts - since her exposure has only been to the host of the germ (the child) and not to the environment where the vomit/diarreah took place then if she's caught it she will have symptoms within 48hrs. The reason for others catching it up to a week later is due to them being in the environment where the bug is living, so on hard surfaces such as floors, taps, flushers, light switches, remote controls etc the bug lives on hard surfaces for up to 14 days. The host (human) is only contagious for 48hrs, hence the school rule.

I agree with trying op, I really think you need to take a step back and stop obsessing over this.

Londongirl86 · 18/12/2019 21:22

@Nogodsnomasters thank you! We will know then by tomorrow night!

@FeatherySquawkington I hope it doesn't spread any further to your family

londongirl86 you're welcome. I understand the obsessing, I have emetophobia too. It's in the same group of mental health as OCD because it causes obsessive compulsive tendencies around the topic, don't beat yourself up. X

Generally speaking it's 24 - 48 hours after exposure. The person is contagious once they start feeling ill and until 48 hours after the last bout of sickness.

In terms of cleaning/handwashing the antibacterial stuff doesn't really do much against the norovirus bug but soap and hot water does work.

FREEM · 18/12/2019 21:52

agree with Nogods
another emmetophobe here and is say from experience 24 to 48 hours after exposure.
Fingers crossed

FeatherySquawkington · 19/12/2019 07:32

My DS got ill three days after exposure so can be longer.

Aragog · 19/12/2019 07:48

They might not get ill. It's not guaranteed.

Christmasquestion · 19/12/2019 15:30

It’s 24-72 hours for norovirus but in most cases it starts around 36 hours after exposure.

Londongirl86 · 19/12/2019 16:02

We are about 49-50 hours after exposure. If we get through to tomorrow morning hopefully we are in the clear then. I'm so relieved nothing has happened so far

Londongirl86 · 20/12/2019 13:50

Sorry! I didn't read that right. She's ok thankyou. Hopefully we are getting into the clear zone. Such a relief

Yes I think you can let yourself relax now, glad to hear that.

Londongirl86 · 21/12/2019 07:59

Thank you! I do need to swap christmas presents with her Monday but it will be outside. Should be ok shouldn't we!? X

Nogodsnomasters · 21/12/2019 08:08

It'll be fine with the child now but since her mum had it after as well it would all depend on her 48hrs period from last d&v so it's hard to tell.

FeatherySquawkington · 21/12/2019 08:08

As long as the Christmas present she gives you isn't contaminated....

Londongirl86 · 21/12/2019 18:30

Oh god nightmare lol. Well I presume everything stopped for her by Wednesday night.
