Advise on braces and ulcers

Hello,
My son had braces fitted a couple of days ago and I have no experience with braces. Other than managing the initial first days of pain as we were advised to expect, he has terrible ulcers where the top back teeth brace blocks are rubbing against his inner cheeks. We are using Bonjela and the wax we were given by the dentist but obviously this comes off every time he cleans his teeth. Is this going to improve with time or is this going to be how it is now for the next 18 months? Any advice or experience would be very, very welcome.

Your poor son, I remember how painful my braces were. I persevered with the wax and the ulcers healed pretty quickly. His inner mouth will toughen up and get used to it but it just takes a bit of time.

I had adult braces a few years back. Terrible ulcers! I did find that my cheeks 'toughened up' over time. Still got an occasional ulcer throughout but nowhere near as bad as the first month or so. Found the wax completely useless!

MY DS had the same experience. It will get better as your son's mouth gets used to the brace..

Thank you all, that is so reassuring to hear you all saying the same thing - that it will improve in time. I feel much better for reading these. Thank you!

We had this and dental wax was our saviour.

Mouth ulcer pastels are good for numbing the pain.

I'm an orthodontic nurse and that will all improve. His mouth will toughen up to the brackets over time. Wax will come off when brushed off but it is really useful to create a carrier between the bracket and the cheeks. He should be able to enjoy his Xmas dinner next week!

It does improve over time.
Lots of dental wax.

We found the dental wax useless, the orthodontist recommended we use the wax from babybels instead, DS got on with that so much better, it was a bit more robust.

Todaythiscouldbe This is an excellent tip.

Thank you everybody else too. My son has read this thread and is feeling much happier.

My DD was the same, ulcers can be so painful can't they, it made her rather miserable but please tell your son this stage is very short-lived. She soon stopped complaining and the ulcers healed pretty quick. Just keep re-applying the wax, annoying as it is when it keeps coming off but just re-apply until he doesn't feel the need anymore, hopefully just a few days.
