Diarrhoea in 13 month old

Hi mummy’s,

I’m at a loss and I really don’t know what to do anymore.

My 1 year old son has had diarrhoea since October 2nd (brought on by a bug with vomiting) the bug went away after a couple weeks as the doctor said it would however the diarrhoea hasn’t and it’s now been 11 weeks.

I have taken him to the doctors, rang 111 who told me to see a pharmacist who directed me to A&E who sent us back to our doctor who FINALLY sent a referral to the paediatrician however it is taking quite a while to come through.

He has 4-5 episodes a day on average every day however sometimes a lot more and more recently less (2/3 a day). He went off his food for the whole duration of this and has only just started eating bits and bobs here and there again recently.

I have tried the obvious things like cutting gluten etc as celiacs and chrons run in the family however no luck with any results.

Since this has begun he has been a very poorly baby and has picked up EVERY single bug one after another. He gets over one and the very next morning he’s poorly with something else. We are both exhausted with the lack of sleep. The last few days he’s had a temp of around 38.6 and been very lethargic and wakes from sleep screaming and shaking (probably the cold he’s got at the moment)

I feel like I’m probably going out of my mind due to the sleep deprivation but could it all be linked? Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing any of this? I’m literally desperate and have shed so many tears as no doctors are listening to me and a 6 week wait for a referral just seems unbearable to me so I’d hate to feel how my little boy feels!

I’m looking for any advice, suggestions, experience or reassurance that it’s probably nothing

Thank you

You really need the paediatrician. Some bugs can damage the lining of the gut and cause sensitivity eg to milk. Excluding foods in small children really should be done under supervision . If you do cut anything out, do it only one food at a time and keep a diary of food and diarrhoea to discuss with your doctors. Sounds like it was a pearler of a but. Hope he improves soon. You amy also need a proper qualified dietician, Stay away from Dr Google and cranks

Do you know if it’s just by referral you can be seen? Celiacs was not picked up in my sister for 17 years and has caused all sorts of interior problems for her. I spoke with my doctors regarding cutting foods and he agreed to do it one food a time and we keep a log. Thank you

Apparently children can develop temporary lactose intolerance after a tummy bug - both of mine always had to avoid milk for a week or so after a bug despite having no other symptoms, as it would make them vomit.

It could be something like that. BUT don't just cut out dairy without speaking to your GP. They'll be able to advise you how to go about it.

Hi, we’ve spoken with the doctor regarding testing food cutting and we’ve tried cutting diary however no luck unfortunately
