Eyesight test

Our 6 year old daughter has had two eyesight tests before with the last one about 18 months ago. Both times vision was 20/20 and no problems.

This time the optician said the eye sight has deteriorated (read on). She had some drops to open her pupils and same eyesight test again.

They said that the eye looks perfect, no problems seen, but the visual acuity isn't as it should be.

Daughter has never complained about poor sight and seems fine but she has had a bad cough this week (before her sight test).

They have referred her to the hospital and we are worried to death.

Anyone else experienced this?

Thanks

Should you have concerns with your children's eyesight...

That’s rather mild short-sightedness. No need to worry - I became severely short-sighted in my left eye at 17 after an accident, so from my experience, I think it’s the teenage years that are a greater worry. 😂

Not to scare you or anything there, just hopefully putting things into perspective, I guess.

Also I think as a precaution under 7s do go to hospital where there are eyesight issues present just to check for issues like astigmatism or lazy eye.

My 5 year old has just been prescribed glasses with +12.75 strength in each lense. Has anyone else had any experience with such a strong prescription? 😊

It has been very interesting trawling the internet looking for hope (or rather for advice to stop me worrying!). My advice from here on is talk to others and speak to the experts - they see this sort of stuff every day.

@Miabeau - wow I wasn’t even aware prescriptions could go past +/ 8. I’d see if you can get the lenses thinned firstly as glasses of such a strong prescription would be rather heavy, and can make one’s eyes look larger.

FordPrefect42 · 06/01/2020 21:07

Plus or minus that should say.

+12.75. glasses have been ordered so waiting for them and they have been thinned. She has an appointment to see a specialist as she may have to have them even stronger. I only noticed that she was holding her reading book quite close to her face when trying to read other than that I would have had no idea she needed them let alone such a strong prescription. X

My goodness, yeah kids tend not to complain about poor eyesight - quite a few of the kids in my family have had a lazy eye from a very young age and prior to their first optician visit nobody would’ve guessed there were any issues present. I imagine that would need a specialist, one of my relatives had to wear patches for lazy eye and severe longsightedness but these days they don’t look as “medical” if you know what I mean? She quite liked wearing them because of the pictures on them. 🙂

Glad everything's okay.

Miabeau - that is pretty strong. The highest prescription I've ever seen was -30DS! Gas Permable contact lenses only (with 2 spare pairs)!

My daughter is excited about wearing glasses and I've worn them all my life but no where near as strong. Was just wondering if there was any more parents who's children have a similar prescription as can't really find any info on it. Thanks.
