DS (9) has been prescribed some clarithromycin in liquid form for a chest infection. He has significant ASD, SAL delay, is hitting 18-36 month targets intellectually, just to put it into context.
The medicine is vile. No flavouring, and no mixing it with milk or ice cream has helped and he won't eat toast and jam at the moment, which was the last resort suggestion made at the melatonin clinic.
Do I go back to GP or pharmacist about this?

I think you can get it in tablet form.
Would he be able to swallow a pill???
I'd go talk to the chemist to see if they can flavour/sweeten/change the form.

Good luck, and hope your boy gets better soon.

Thanks Kitten, but unfortunately there's NO chance of getting a tablet in him either. We tried melatonin tablets for months before they let us resume the liquid.

Does he take Calpol? I was looking for tips the other day as my DS has been prescribed penicillin V and it’s horrid. Anyway one of the tips was to draw up the antibiotics doseage and then pop some calpol into the end. That’s what he will taste initially and then by the time it’s in he’s swallowed it and it’s too late.
Haven’t tried it. Don’t know if it works. I’ve convinced ours to hold his nose and have a chocolate button afterwards which has worked so far but it might help you?!

I feel your pain. My son has gdd and since the nurses at the hospital tried to give him midazolam (which apparently tastes vile) then he won't take any medication in hospital at all and we struggle with anything that's not calpol or nurofen at home. I find a tablet hidden in a spoonful of jam works. Liquid medicine is a nightmare but sometimes honey and lemon juice mixed in helps a bit. Either that or give it to him when he is asleep.

Thanks @KTD27 and @elliejjtiny. This morning was a bit of a disaster, and I didn't manage to get him to take it even though I mixed it with ice cream. I sent it in with him though, and the lovely teachers at his special school managed to get him to have some by saying 'Medicine, water, then chocolate button'. And it worked! So, knowing I would not get away with just a chocolate button, this evening we did 'Medicine, water, then icecream with strawberry sauce and mini-marshmallows'. (There was bargaining involved - it was tense, I tell you!)
But it worked! So I think I have it cracked, but both of those suggestions are great and I'll keep those in my back pocket for when it's needed! And his cough is getting better, so I

Well done OP. Getting medicine into them can be a bloody nightmare.
Bit of bribery - why not ? Whatever works.
Hope he feels better soon
