Mums comment about my baby

Not sure if this is the right board to post on..

I have a 7 month old and my mum said to me today I should be concerned as he can't sit up on his own yet. He does it for a short time but then falls to the side a few seconds later.

He's my first child so I don't know if this is normal or not or if I should be concerned. He hasn't rolled over either yet.

Should I be worried? Sad

No I dont think you should be worried. Does he sit up ok in a highchair ? Think ds crawled around 8 months

Aquamarine1029 · 06/12/2019 18:29

I wouldn't be worried yet. Many babies can't sit up unsupported for long until 8 months. Every baby is different, and it certainly doesn't mean anything is wrong. If you have concerns you should talk to your HV or the baby's doctor.

coffeeaddiction · 06/12/2019 18:30

All babies are different so don't worry , you can encourage it a little by propping up in one of those doughnut shaped play mats

RhymingRabbit3 · 06/12/2019 18:32

Most babies I know sat up between 6 and 7 months. Quite a few were older. One or two were younger. There is plenty of natural variation.

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 06/12/2019 18:32

DS1 didn't sit up unaided until he was 7.5 months, then walked at 10 months. They're all different, please don't be worried just on the strength of one comment.

SallyLovesCheese · 06/12/2019 19:01

My DS couldn't sit unaided until at least 8 months and only just started crawling, about 11 months. They do it in their own time.

I like the popcorn analogy: all the popcorn goes in the same oil at the same time at the same temperature, yet the kernels do not all pop at the same time.

anonymis · 06/12/2019 19:07

Thanks everyone. He slouches in his high chair as well, I'm hoping that he just manages to do it soon but I won't stress about it just yet Smile

My 7 month old doesn’t sit either. She’s clearly alert and interactive so I’m not worried
Some of the really delayed sitters, walkers in dds class at school are top of the year. I don’t think it has any bearing on intelligence x

ktjb39 · 06/12/2019 19:16

I wouldn't worry just yet - one of my children didn't sit up until he started crawling at 9 months then he realised what to do!

lakequeen · 06/12/2019 19:24

I wouldn't be concerned about the lack of sitting but would consult the health visitor regarding the lack of rolling I think.

Babyfg · 06/12/2019 19:28

I would ask a hv about rolling over but I wouldn't worry about the sitting up

lyingwanker · 06/12/2019 19:32

@Babyfg none of mine rolled over as young babies.

FabLaura · 06/12/2019 19:45

I would be a little worried but not sleepless nights worried. The comment about looking around and being interactive is a good one, is baby doing that? Do you do tummy time as that helps strengthen their core which must help with sitting up

Babyfg · 06/12/2019 20:35

@lyingwanker I'm sure there's nothing wrong with rolling over late but I'd mention it to a hv. I didn't tell her it was a worry but it would be something I would ask about. It's up to op if she wants to or not

Dinosforall · 06/12/2019 20:44

DS1 didn't sit until 8 months, crawl until 15 or walk until 20 months. I did worry at the time. He is now a perfectly mobile preschooler who can already read and add up two-digit numbers

anonymis · 06/12/2019 21:33

I think I will consult HV about the rolling over. He hates tummy time and I can only get about 5 minutes maximum of him doing it before he gets really frustrated and starts to cry!

He rolls over (kind of) in the sense that he can twist his upper body side wards but he doesn't actually fully roll over. I hope I'm making sense here

Don't worry. They do it in their own time.

My dd can roll over but doesn't fancy doing it unless there's something she really wants. She prefers to sit up.

She doesn't crawl either, she bum shuffles.

Witchend · 07/12/2019 13:35

I don't think there's anything to worry about now if he's reaching and grasping and reacting to you.

6 months is the average to sit. That means plenty of children don't until older.
DD2 didn't sit until she was about 11 months old. That was because she crawled at 5 months, so put her to sit, and she threw herself on her tummy to crawl off.
Rolling seems to vary dramatically.
DD2 rolled by about 4 months, but doesn't have a hand on one side, so easier for her. However dd1 was about 10 months, ds was 7 months. I've known plenty of children earlier and later than that.

Not doing either of those things doesn't worry me at all.
