Nail Clipping Accident

Hi, First time poster here, this evening my husband accidentally cut a chunk off of our baby boy's finger using nail clippers while he was in his little baby bathSad He screamed and his finger bled for about 10 minutes. I used cotton pads to stop the bleeding then used a water wipe to wipe the wound and then Sudocrem on top of it. I haven't bandaged the wound because I only have adult plasters and I'm worried about it being a choking hazard. Is this correct or do I need to do something else? I've fed him and he's now asleep in his cot and he's acting normal. Will appreciate any replys xxx

Forgot to mention he's 12 weeks old and had his first lot of vaccinations

Ahh bless him and you! If he is asleep leave him he will probably be fine. My oh did this with one of ours when they were tiny. I think we were more shocked than the baby!

Don't worry! I did this to my daughter and felt like the biggest piece of shit ever. It healed very quickly with no permanent harm done! The joys of parenthood!

I was nervous doing this for the first time with my brand new baby so asked the health visitor to do it. She made him bleed. I felt bad.

Don't worry. You'll do it more carefully next time.

Thanks for the reply's everyone Smile How did you treat your babies finger when you injured it? Shall I cover it up tomorrow with some sort of bandage or leave it and keep applying Sudocrem?

Please don’t worry! This honestly should be given as baby advice when we leave hospital. I snipped off a chunk of dd’s toe Blush

I just kept it clean and dry, and changed the plaster and it was absolutely fine. Didn’t need a dressing after 2 days. Babies heal surprisingly fast!

Hope you’re both ok Flowers

I would just let it air dry and heal its very quick to heal at that age and if they don't suck their fingers they probably won't be distracted by it.

I always used to nibble nails rather than cut or clip

SockQueen · 04/12/2019 23:32

I've done this with both my babies. Once it's clean, just leave it alone, it'll heal pretty quickly by itself.

Horehound · 04/12/2019 23:40

@RB68 but how?! They are so small I don't see how you can nibble them?!
I age a 14 week old with scratchy nails!

randomsabreuse · 04/12/2019 23:45

Think everyone does it. We used a plaster then sewed shut a babygro sleeve with integral scratch mitt to keep that hand out of mouth...

My 2nd has had so many more scratches as I'm such a wuss about his nails!

ShyteSprite · 04/12/2019 23:49

I did this with my son when he was a baby. Took a bit of skin off his thumb when cutting his nails. He's 13 now, I can still remember how awful I felt at the time. Felt like the world's worst mother. He'll be fine and won't hold it against you!

PixieDustt · 05/12/2019 00:03

I caught a bit of DS's finger whilst cutting his nail and as PP said you feel like the biggest piece of shit.
I wiped it and let it air dry. My mum mentioned to just keep an eye on it and watch it isn't getting infected. After about a day it scabbed over.
Those baby clippers are wank.

RB68 · 05/12/2019 09:41

They just seemed to naturally snag a bit and then easily nibble, peel off. But DD was Prem so maybe nails were a bit weak. Later on I used to do them when she was asleep so no wriggling and fighting etc
