Best cream for eczema on 8 month old

Hi all. My baby boy is 8 months old and since the cold weather has struck he has developed eczema. It’s particularly bad on his cheeks, arms and behind his knees. A pharmacist saw him and confirmed it was eczema and told us to keep it very moisturised and warm regular baths with no bath products in the water. It doesn’t seem to be getting any better though. Can you recommend any creams that I can buy or home remedies that might help him?

My son got it so bad on his face he needed a mild hydrocortisone cream to get rid of it. However at the same time the doctor told me we had to moisturise at least 4 times a day and we used Child's Farm baby moisturiser. Now it's under control whenever it flares up I use the moisturiser minimum 4 times a day or more if I remember and it clears up really quickly.

Oats are very good - dump a pile on a muslin, tie it in a bunch and then tie it around your tap as you run the bath.

I’d also suggest moisturising from head to toe. Each child is different so what works for one may not work for another, but for my dd’s eczema we’ve used Aveeno and Weleda baby formulations. But it might be that you need hydrocortisone cream too so I’d get him looked at by your gp.

Im slightly surprised by the pharmacist saying regular baths - I thought cutting down on them altogether was the advice so I’d double check with gp also.

Child's farm works well on my son.

Also just came on today Child's Farm moisturiser Smile Also in my experience baths/water/swimming aggravate eczema so I would be tempted to bath maybe every other day if it is really bad!

I use cetreban cream I got prescribed when she had a bad flair up and do a top to toe moisturise morning and night. It says not to use on under 1s but the GP said it was fine. DD mostly gets it on her forearms and this and only bathing her twice a week mostly keeps it at bay but I was also prescribed euomovate ointment which is a steroid cream when it comes back.

If you take him to GP they will prescribe him some cream and possibly steroid too. Can you get an 'emergency' appointment tomorrow, they're usually pretty good at seeing children if you say he's in a bit of discomfort. The health visitor used to be able to prescribe emollients too but it's usually harder to see them. My son suffered from terrible eczema for the first 3 years of his life. I had to cover him in greasy parrifin based creams multiple times a day. See if they can prescribe aveeno, that has colloidal oats in it. Some doctors recommend nightly baths, some say weekly. You can put normal oats in a muslin and let the bath water run through it to soothe his skin. If he scratches a lot you can buy scratch mits, my son had to have them at night and in the car. You could also try natural barrier balms especially on his exposed parts (face etc). I just bought a Mum&You Baby Face the Day Stick which has good reviews.

Thanks everyone, you’ve been very helpful! I have some more creams and I’ll try the oats trick. If it doesn’t improve I’ll take him to the GP x
