How much calpol and ibuprofen

Hi there, my baby boy is almost 10 months old and has been teething pretty much non stop for months. All four top and bottom are now through, and the four outer ones came through all at once just recently which was a bit of a nightmare for the poor sod. I thought this would be it for a while, and now he seems to be in even more discomfort, chewing and dribbling like mad and very irritable. Could his molars be starting to come through already???

But my main question is pain relief... we've been giving him calpol once a day at night before bed for a few weeks and in the final stages of the last batch, ibuprofen for three nights. We've since had a freak out at the amount of calpol regularly given (everyday, once a day for a few weeks). We have now stopped all pain relief for fear of overdosing. But the poor mite, now has even more teething, a rotten cold and diarrhoea with some nappy rash. Yikes!!! What can we do? Any suggestions much appreciated :)

I can only give my experience... We did the exact same thing during really rough periods of teething around the same age, one dose every night before bed for many weeks in a row, even though it is not advised to give paracetamol for extended length of time, I figured since it wasn't the full daily dose (4x a day) it'd be OK. He's 5 now and it's had no ill effect on him but I cannot say that will be the case in all children as Im not medically trained!

Have you tried teething granules? My DDs all loved them and they seemed to work (although I know the homeopathic remedies get a bashing on MN!)

Very cold flannels to chew or teething toys that can go in fridge / freezer.

I gave my first calpol regularly while she was teething & she’s shown no bad signs so far! Not long til our second starts & will be doing the same again I think

I wouldn’t be giving paracetamol based paint relief every day for weeks, it is tough on livers especially small ones.

Try non-pain relief teething things like anbesol liquid, teething granules or bonjela.

And liver damage can take years to manifest, and often you won’t know until it’s serious.

As per your other post, you are not supposed to give Calpol for more then 3 days without consulting a doctor or pharmacist. You are also not supposed to give both painkillers.

Also you are supposed to read the instructions on the box.

He’ll be fine. You are way off overdosing. The paracetamol will be long cleared by the time you give him another dose. It’s only liver toxic in overdose. The 3 day advice is because you ought to seek health advice if kid is not better within 3 days, but he’s teething so you know what’s up with him. Personally, I’d give ibuprofen at night as antinflammitary properties will help the teething better!

This came up on the other thread too. The 3 day advice is there for people to take. Not to be ignored because you 'know' better.

We know nothing about the child. That's why the advice is to consult a professional, not Mumsnet.
