Temp. 38.3-A&E?

Tedi19 · 29/11/2019 22:51

My baby is 6 months old and this morning woke up screaming/crying for about an hour, then vomited a lot and after that started to seem listless and kept falling asleep and not really responding to me calling her name. I took her to the hospital but seemed to be completely ok when we eventually got there- they checked her blood sugars, ears, temp etc... and found nothing so sent us back home. Since arriving back home she has had bouts of screaming/crying, is very sleepy and her temp. is now 38.3. I'm not sure if I should head back to A&E this evening or maybe wait until the morning. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I’d say a temp of 38.3 is quite normal in a baby with a viral infection. Unless you are worried about other symptoms, A&E doesn’t seem necessary. Neurofen and calpol should help. 111 if you need advice.

user1471549213 · 29/11/2019 22:55

Personally I wouldnt go back in with a temp of 38.3. I think if it were over 39.5 heading for 40 and wasn't coming down with calpol/Nurofen then I might go back.

If you are worried though of course you should go with your baby.

It could.be anything or nothing. Teething even. They can get quite high temps with that.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 29/11/2019 22:55

A temperature of that reading wouldn't make me think of A&E, but she's so young perhaps try calling 111 for advice? They will point you in the right direction. Hope she gets better soon.

Mopmum35 · 29/11/2019 22:59

Do you think she is teething maybe...

Mopmum35 · 29/11/2019 22:59

Posted to soon. She might be teeting.

Piixxiiee · 29/11/2019 23:08

Yeah I agree that's not a bad temp. At 6 months I'd give nurofen/ calpol and wait the night out- if you dont co sleep just keep checking her for you peace of mind but let her sleep/feed as and when she needs. It's hard with a poorly baby, it's worse at night too but if no other symptoms I'd guess teething. Maybe viral. Hopefully much better tomorrow

Tedi19 · 29/11/2019 23:12

Would the vomiting, screaming/crying, listlessness and drowsiness not be a cause for concern? Could that all be related to teething? She hasn't wanted to chew on anything and isn't sucking on her hands.

If she is listless and acting drowsily then yes to A&E

Solitaryradiator · 29/11/2019 23:21

Teething doesn’t cause temperatures

This is NHS advice but if you are worried then seek help. Don’t let randoms online dictate how you care for your child

MiniMaxi · 29/11/2019 23:24

Teething certainly wouldn’t cause temps above 38. I think it’s a red herring.

Sounds like she might be dehydrated which can be serious. Is she still having wet nappies?

MiniMaxi · 29/11/2019 23:25

Sorry I meant to say, dehydrated because of virus causing vomiting etc. They can go downhill fast.

Doctor always told me if they are happily playing then they are probably ok, but if listless / really not themselves then get checked up again.

thaegumathteth · 29/11/2019 23:58

The thing that would worry me is the listlessness - call 111 and ask for advice

littlebillie · 30/11/2019 07:23

Call out if your GP they are always brilliant with children. She is little seek help

NigesFakeWalkingStick · 30/11/2019 08:00

The listlessness would be my main concern absolutely. The temp it and of itself isn't huge but then she's only 6 months old.

Is she feeding still? Wet/dirty nappies?

Witchend · 30/11/2019 12:56

Temperature as others have said isn't the issue. One of mine hit 41 on more than one occasion, and appeared less ill than another of mine does at 37.8. You need to look at the symptoms rather than the temperature.

If she's screamed for a while, then she's got enough energy to do that, and it would be natural for her to then be tired afterwards, so it's probably tying in together.

Is the temperature coming down with Calpol?

Listlessness is, but unless she's presenting differently from this morning then I'd assume if I was there with them, it's just the virus running the course. However I am not there and you are, so you need to make that call yourself.

Please don't think teething, it clearly is more than that.

What I would do is give Calpol regularly. It will help with both the temperature and pain. Or ibroprofen if she's old enough. it was 6 months when mine were little, but it may be older now.
Use one of the medicine syringes to get about 2.5ml of water in her every 5 minutes. If you have/can get dehydration fluids then that's even better. The chemist should have them.
If she's not taking that amount/throwing it straight back up again, try every 10 minutes. If not getting that in, then get her to A&E because she may be too dehydrated.

How is your dd op?

Tedi19 · 03/12/2019 21:50

It's now 4 days later and for the last few days she has been on and off- drowsy and grizzly mainly but still smiled and laughed every now and again. Although today she woke up and was very very sleepy and just generally did not look well. We telephoned 111 earlier and they called an ambulance for us- the paramedics gave her Calpol and she seemed slightly more alert while we were in hospital (they checked her oxygen, temp etc...). Now we're back home and she just doesn't seem herself and her temp is 39. We've given her some more Calpol but doesn't seem to have worked as well as the first time.

I should mention that she seems to have enough wet nappies.

If her temp is increasing and it's been four days it may be more of a bacterial infection. When she's next crying can you see her throat? My eldest often was like your description with tonsillitis.
I'd keep cycling between nurofen and calpol and see your GP tomorrow. If they're concerned they'll refer you to a&e to see paeds.

Nogodsnomasters · 04/12/2019 07:36

5 days of a high temps in a 6 month old definitely seems like something bacterial to me. Did they get a sample of her urine? Sorry didn't see if you'd mentioned that. Could be a uti.

argueifnecessary · 04/12/2019 07:43

Have you not taken her to the GP yet? And if so then why? They would be able to do a blood test, a more thorough urine test etc.

Busymummy16 · 04/12/2019 07:46

My LO got v dehydrated at 23 months from 9 days of high temps. I would trust your instincts. I was so glad we went to a and e she had infection markers in bloods and had a drip but turned out to be two viruses (including RSV). Lots of nasty stuff about OP trust your instincts.

Tedi19 · 04/12/2019 17:48

Her temp. keeps going up and down (checked with no Calpol). The nurse checked her throat in A&E and said it was fine. They tried to collect urine but didn't manage to do so and the paediatrician said not to worry about it and just to send us home. I'm currently living far from our GP as our house is being redone so we're staying in a place that's over an hour away. I called the GP yesterday morning and he said he doesn't see the need for us to come in and as long as she has enough wet nappies and takes Calpol when her temp is up then she'll be fine. I'm not really sure what to do. She vomited again this morning and since then has been a mixture of playful, smiley, very tired and very grizzly. I've stripped her down to just her nappy.

Just an update in case anyone else ends up having the same issues with their bub... we ended up taking her back to A&E as we couldn't keep her temp. down. They finally checked her bloods and urine. No UTI but had quite high infection markers (89) so had to stay in hospital and LO was given very strong antibiotics (IV). Been sent home with oral antibiotics now and she seems much better. Thanks to everyone for their advice.
