Hypothyroidism

Hello. I just need some reassurance.
My 15 month old daughter has always been a big child however was born at an average birth weight 8lbs3oz. Her weight has been off the charts since maybe 6 months and every health care professional I asked about it either blamed her diet or told me the weight would drop off when she’s walking. I lost the rag with a GP, who straight up told me I was over feeding my child (with no proof might I add), so I asked to see a specialist. We had some blood tests done and within a week he got back to me and advised her thyroid levels were low and she should start levothyroxine. This was great news until I realised that this late diagnosis might have an impact on her development milestones.
Upon further reading, studies suggested that the later treatment is started, the more of an impact it has on the child’s cognitive abilities. My daughter is meeting her milestones at the moment. The only thing she is behind on is mobility simply because she is too heavy to carry her own weight but still makes an effort whilst having support.
Anyway the reason I’ve made this post was to see if there are any other mums out there who’s children were diagnosed with hypothyroidism and started treatment a while ( say longer than 6 months) after birth. I just want to see how that affected your child and how it might affect mine.
I also would like to see how long it took for the levothyroxine to start working its “magic”. You can’t blame me for being impatient.

Thanks to all that offer guidance and advice.

Hi

I’m sorry I haven’t got anything to add that can help your question I’m afraid. Just wanted to send an empathetic hug.
My dd was diagnosed with congenital hypothyroidism on the heel prick test at 5 days old. It floored me. I was absolutely devastated. I read all the articles online and it really did freak me. She wasn’t started on medication and luckily it corrected itself by the time she was 16 weeks.
She’s since been diagnosed with other endocrine issues that require a multitude of daily meds and injections so I really do understand your fear.
All I can say, is the meds really do kick in well and dd began to see a difference within 3-4 months.
The only advice I can give you is to hold onto Your little girl. She’s the same person, her weight is just a side effect of her condition. My dd is v big for the same reason. It’s heartbreaking when people comment. Have a stock reply ready that will shut them up and make them feel awkward.

Above all look after yourself too. X
