I feel like an awful mummy because I don’t know what to do.

Oldest dd11 had the flu last weekend, has got over it and now just an annoying cough.

Dd3 has caught it and for the past few days been abit unwell. Yesterday she fell asleep at 9am after waking at 5 (normal wake up time), then again at 1.30 and asked to go bed at 5.30. She then slept from 5.30 until 8.30!!

Iv just taken her temp and it’s 39.5, she’s so poorly bless her. She says she doesn’t want anyone though so won’t let me cuddle her etc!

She’s had some calpol and is still in bed on her iPad with juice (she’s never normally allowed juice)

Dd11 shares rooms so is sat in bed keeping an eye on her.

What do I do? I feel crappy! Dh is working 12 today 😩 she’s a daddy’s girl so could do with his help!

Hi , I am a mum of 3 and please do not feel bad . You are not bad and not an awful mum otherwise you wouldn't be asking for advice. Flowers

It is definitely chest infection. The mucus of the flu must ha e stored in her chest.
Do you use homeopathic remedies?

Calpol will not help a part from suppressing the natural reaction of her body to the infection.

If you use homeopathic remedies I can advice you on some depending on your daughter 's synthoms.

If you dont , in the meanwhile keep some fresh water with a little vinegard and with Muslin cloth apply it on the forehead. This will help reduce her temperature naturally.
Also do not feel scared about her having fever. Instead you need to tackle her chest infection.

diamond400 · 24/11/2019 13:47

Has she had flu vaccine? I’d give her regular calpo every 4-6 hours to keep her fever down and help her feel a bit better. Plenty of fluid for hydration and a little food if she feels like it. Hope she feels better soon

bookbuddy · 24/11/2019 13:50

Call 111 for advice high temp and cough could signify an infection

ofwarren · 24/11/2019 13:52

Did you post this twice?

TheMustressMhor · 24/11/2019 13:53

It is definitely chest infection

How on earth can you possibly know this?

OP - give calpol and nurofen for children alternately and lots of fluids.

TheGlaikitRambler · 24/11/2019 13:54

Please don't rely on homoeopathy for this as suggested, get real medical advice from 111 if her temp stays elevated or she stops drinking fluids or if you just don't feel things are right. Calpol will help with the fever. You are doing everything right.

gamerchick · 24/11/2019 13:57

Regular Calpol and fluids. If her temp goes over 40 and you can't keep it down for long then ring 111.

Don't do homeopathic for flu. Hmm

BlossomingTulip · 24/11/2019 18:06

I always used homeopathic remedies and I know for sure , by experience that it is chest infection when after few days of flu you get high temperature.
I just gave my advice , based on my experience with my children, that's all.
Obviously everyone here shares their experience and I shared mine.
Smile

BlossomingTulip

Where in that post does it suggest the bairn has a chest infection?

gamerchick · 24/11/2019 18:33

The OP hasn't even mentioned a bloody cough FFS Hmm

Lougle · 24/11/2019 18:41

Flu is horrible, but nobody here can say "it is definitely a chest infection". A feature of flu is a cough and high temperature. Some people also go on to have a chest infection, which is a complication of flu - it isn't inherently part of the flu virus.

You need to weigh up how poorly your DD is. If she is having perky times and floppy times, seems quite a bit better after calpol, but droops again towards the end of the time frame, and is drinking well, I would probably push fluids, keep a close eye and review a bit later.

If you are worried in any way, that your DD seems more poorly than you'd expect, isn't drinking well, isn't weeing, isn't perking up after calpol, or is going 'downhill' rather than 'uphill', I would want to take her for a face to face consultation with a professional, but do warn them that you think it's flu.

Lastly, never listen to anyone who has diagnosed your child over the internet after a single line like 'an annoying cough'. Nobody should be that arrogant.

gamerchick · 24/11/2019 18:43

A single line that wasn't even attached to the kid the OP is talking about anyway.

itsabongthing · 24/11/2019 18:45

Follow your instinct and only you know what is normal for your child.

For me personally, I would not seek medical help unless the fever persisted for more than a couple of days, OR it was not coming down with calpol and nurofen OR they were wheezy etc. If none of those or other worrying signs were present I would assume virus initially and it just has to run its course. But if in doubt call 111.

JustDanceAddict · 24/11/2019 19:49

Def call 111 if you haven’t already. I did for DS this morning as his flu symptoms had not improved in over 48 hours and he practically passed out in front of dh. We got an appt later on in the morning.
He is a teen but his temp was also very high - over 39.4.
Flu and associated issues can be serious, def see someone’s face to face.

Foxton20 · 24/11/2019 21:28

So her temp has been up and down all day with calpol and she’s slept a few times. She went bed at 7 and has just woken up with a big nose bleed. Shall I ring 111?

OP posts:
Nightmanagerfan · 24/11/2019 21:31

Absolutely ring 111. That’s quite concerning. I think they will at least get a doctor to call you back

hauntedvagina · 24/11/2019 21:31

Yes, ring 111 please OP.

QuestionableMouse · 24/11/2019 21:39

Yes ring.

You might end up in A&E so pack a bag with stuff. Don't forget a phone charger.

Foxton20 · 24/11/2019 21:47

Her temp is 38.6 atm, it wasn’t bleeding when she walked into our room, she didn’t make a noise when it was happening just wiped all over herself, if anything she seemed abit better! She’s currently asleep next to Dh in our bed with the fan on. Im waiting for a doctor to call back.

She’s had a really runny nose today, and coughing lots 😭

OP posts:
hauntedvagina · 24/11/2019 22:17

Pleased you called, hope she's on the mend soon.

yellowitsme · 24/11/2019 22:45

Omg that would of terrified me of that was my dc! Hope she's feeling better soon

Foxton20 · 25/11/2019 07:40

Hi! Doctor rang back and said he thinks the bleed is from her nose being irritated from sneezing etc. He said as her temp has came down that she will be ok to wait until this morning for a doctors temp but thinks it might be viral as my daughter has got over it within a few days. She slept in our bed with Dh and I slept on her mattress on the floor. My god I ache 😂😩

OP posts:
itsabongthing · 25/11/2019 08:18

One of my DDs was prone to nosebleeds particularly with a bad cold and it was terrifying the first couple fo times.
The first time she was in bed asleep and I just suddenly noticed the big patch of blood, I thought initially it has come from her ear which was so frightening, so I feel for you.
I hope she feels better soon,

MbwaKidogo · 25/11/2019 20:36

This is strange, maybe it's part of this flu. My 12 year old has just got over flu and he had 3 nosebleeds - big ones - on his last day of being poorly. He never normally has nosebleeds.

HouseSchmurchase · 26/11/2019 18:03

Dd has only ever had one nosebleed and it was when she had a temp of 39 and had been unwell for a week. GP said it was "normal" and not to worry. She hadn't been sneezing at all though.
