Infant gaviscon while breastfeeding

Hi,
Wondering if anyone else has given their baby infant gaviscon while breastfeeding? My baby is only 6 weeks old and I really want to avoid the constipation that can come with it, but really want to try something as her reflux is clearly making her uncomfortable. I have already cut dairy from my diet which resulted in some improvement (projectile vomiting stopped) but she still has some really bad times, especially overnight. Anyone else have experience with reflux and/or gaviscon? Would love some advice as this is so sad to see her go through

Are you exclusively breastfeeding? I gave my ds One dose of infant Gaviscon and it clogged him up for days, and after two doses he stopped taking it because he didn't like the bottle. In the end I went back to the doctor and asked them to prescribe something else because Gaviscon wasn't working for us at all. They told me that they only prescribe Gaviscon because it's so cheap and it's really not suitable for people who are exclusively breastfeeding. They gave me ranitidine (Zantac) instead and within 10 minutes of his first dose he felt much better. Hang in there! Reflux is so tough but it can and will be so much better once you find the right medicine Thanks

I gave up BF and put baby onto formula Sad Giving Gaviscon to a BF baby is impossible.

Yeah my DS was BF and had gaviscon and it didn't work that well, just made him constipated. I gave up completely with it, but a friend suggested trying half a dose. That did actually work a little bit for a few days before the constipation kicked in. We went back to the Doc, who seemed quite put out that we'd ever been given gaviscon in the first place and gave us ranitidine with absolutly no discussion.

Please don't give up BF, in my experience you are past the worst parts of it!! But do go back to your doc and ask for ranitidine. I understand they might be having problems with supply right now though, Good luck!

I did it by expressing some milk, mixing in the gaviscon and then syringing it into his mouth before a feed. I did two doses a day. To be honest it was a big faff and didn't seem to achieve much!

Ranitidine helped more but in the end cranial osteopathy seemed to make the biggest difference. I had quite low expectations of it but figured it couldn't hurt!

DS is now 6 months and still voms a fair bit but is unbothered by it! Still ebf!

Thank you everyone. I did give her some last night. We mixed it in some ebm and used one of those cups to feed it to her. It was a nightmare to get into her and she wasn't happy... But she was so happy overnight. In between feeds she actually slept in her bedside crib which we've not been able to get her to do these whole 6 weeks. She's smiley and happy this morning and it's so nice. I have a follow up with my GP and will still enquire about ranitidine because long-term this gaviscon is quite difficult and I don't want to give her a bottle at all.

Came on to say the same as the others - it's near impossible to get into them, we never got as far as finding out if it made her constipated.

Ranitidine was a wonder drug in our house, and only 0.5ml to syringe in.

Horehound · 20/11/2019 08:41

Yes I have just started using it this week. First 2 nights was ok 3rd night onwards it's made no difference and that's gone from one sachet to two.
He's still acidy and vomits.

Horehound · 20/11/2019 08:50

Ranitidine ..looked it up a few days ago and it's been recalled recently so a) I'm not sure you'll get it
B) I would give it a miss if it is carcinogenic.
I'm saying this as someone with close ties to gsk..

You can get generic ranatadine which has no carcangeric concerns - the current concern is not about the i ingredients used but about inpurities which have not been found in anything other than branded xantac

We tried gaviscon with DS - wasn't as effective as finding the right things for me not to eat.

Made it up with ebm and syringed it in which was easier than cup feeding.
