So ds, 13, has had problems since January this year. Basically horrific diarrhoea and pain etc. Had bloods and stool samples done and all ok except low ferritin. No one concerned. Saw paediatrician in July and told me it was allergies so spent 3 months doing exclusions and no change. I then found out he had a rectal pro lapse. He had it for a while but I didn’t know. He is autistic so not great at relating things. Had a follow up with paed who said let’s do an X-ray which showed severe impaction so had 4 weeks clear out of moviol.

He went to hospital last week under a different paed (surgeon) who injected the area of the pro lapse and said it had 75% chance not working and sometimes needs multiple injections. Anyway same day we came home, ds went to the toilet and the prolapse came back out so it failed. I rang hospital on the ward but they couldn’t help. Left message with secretary and paed wasn’t concerned. I rang back today as I’ve had no answers what happens next. Secretary told me paed said I have to take him to an out patient appointment. Won’t rebook him for another injection. He said after the op that he must have been impacted in the past (unknown to me) and that the area was ‘very baggy’ but he wasn’t concerned. The secretary told me paed said he wasn’t concerned and will probably correct itself?!?!?!? This is coming up to a year!!!

I’m really worried. Ds still has bad belly, aches, opens his vowels 2-3 times a day and still has the pro lapse so we’ve got nowhere. I’m really scared. Can anyone share experiences or tell me what’s likely to happen next? Surely the longer it’s left the more likely he’s going to have future problems? He has mental health problems and severe anxiety which he has medication for so this is a massive concern despite me telling them this.

Can't get any advice sorry, just commenting to bump and offer best wishes. Must be horrid for you and DS.
I've only ever heard of older ladies with a prolapse as severe your your DS, and in their cases it was eventually corrected by an operation. Maybe they are trying to hold on as long as possible because he is young?
Goodluck OP, I'd keep pushing until you get some answers.

Thanks. From what I gather the longer it’s left the worse it is/more damage. I don’t want the surgery but at the same time rather they got on with it and did it so we can get past this if that’s what he needs.

If he is still having loose stools and tummy ache is he constipated? If he is prone to impaction and constipation this will not help his prolapse. Is he on medication to manage constipation

Wonderingwhyme · 19/11/2019 19:41

I was giving him the movicol when we left hospital but it seemed to be making it worse so he hasn’t had any for 2 days and he says he’s doing actual poos and hasn’t had stomach ache in 2 days. Surgeon just said if he doesn’t poo for 2 days go buy some movicol or lactulose so I’m just keeping an eye on it as he’s going twice a day at the moment.

Had a call from school today as the pro lapse was bleeding again. They can’t do anything and neither can i. It’s not bleeding much but enough it worries him.

There is a charity called ERIC, look them up as they may have some advice.
